• Pauline L. Gates, 87, of Halifax. Died Feb. 27 at Pine Heights in Brattleboro. Wife of the late Eugene V. Gates for 62 years. Mother of Eugene P. Gates and his longtime companion, Flo Wilson, of Wilmington; Katherine Nebelski and her husband, William, of Hinsdale, N.H.; Sandra Gates Stevens of Greenfield, Mass.; Linda Swanson and her husband Bruce of Halifax; and Barbara Clark and her husband, Timothy, of Guilford. Born in Guilford, the daughter of the late William and Martha (Jacob) Petrie, she was raised and educated in Guilford, where she attended public schools. With her husband, she owned and operated the Gates Grove Farm in Halifax, assisting with the day-to-day operation of the farm. She was also a faithful and devoted wife and loving mother whose life centered around her family. Memorial information: Private graveside services will take place in Baker Cemetery in Guilford at a later date when the cemetery reopens. • Louis A. Glatthorn, 96, formerly of Brattleboro. Died Feb. 24 at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington. Sister of Dorothy Egbert of Brattleboro. Born in Philadelphia, one of nine children of the late Louis and Anna (Girvin) Glatthorn, he attended schools in Phila­delphia and served in the Mer­chant Marine during World War II. After the war, he spent his ca­reer working for the Atlantic Richfield Co. (ARCO) as a navigator, where he traveled the world. He spent his retirement in Philadelphia, Reno, Las Vegas, Cali­fornia, Brattleboro, and Bennington. Memorial information: A private service took place at Ker Westerlund Funeral home in Brattleboro, fol­lowed by graveside committal serv­ices with full military honors in Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery in Brattleboro. Donations to the Ver­mont Veterans Home, 325 North St., Bennington, VT 05201.

• Frank M. Kimball, 87, of Bellows Falls. Died Feb. 29 at McGirr Nursing Home in Bellows Falls. Husband of Juanita B. Hinds for more than 65 years. Father of Barbara J. Healy and Diane L. Ashley. Brother of Ernestine Lake and the late Oliver and Forest Kimball, Beverly Eager, and Alice Fortez. Born in Bellows Falls, the son of the late Ernest and Emma (Rollins) Kimball, he was a 1942 graduate of Bellows Falls High School. Following graduation, he joined the Marine Corps and served in the South Pacific during World War II in the First Marine Division. After the war, he joined the U.S. Post Office Department and eventually served as the postmaster in Bellows Falls. He retired in 1984. Memorial information: A graveside service was held March 5 in Oak Hill Cemetery in Bellows Falls. Donations to the American Legion Post 37 Scholarship Fund in Bellows Falls.

• Mark Bennett Langmaid, 58, of Putney. Died Feb. 23. Partner of Linda M. Brooks of Putney for 18 years. Father of Amanda Sabo of North Westminster. Brother of the late Scott Langmaid. Born in Brattleboro, the son of the late Charles B. Langmaid and Corrine E. (Searles) Langmaid, he graduated from Brattleboro Un­ion High School, class of 1971. He later attended Castleton State College, earning a B.A. in English in 1977. He began a 33-year career doing sales work in 1979, accepting an entry-level position job with Putney Paper, working for Earl and Shirley Stockwell. He was promoted to sales manager over the next six years. He visited customers and at­tended paper industry events all over the country. He then became Northeast Operations manager for Arden Rice Cakes/Quaker Oats in Putney from 1985 to 1987. He was responsible for product sales and distribution from Pennsylvania to Maine. He attended health food and natural food shows all over the country. He was hired by local entrepre­neur Neil Joseph, founder of Sonnax, in 1987 when the company was lo­cated in Putney. He spent nearly 25 years with Sonnax, involved in sales and working with extraordinary peo­ple, led by CEO Tommy Harmon. Memorial information: A private memorial service was held at his home in Putney on March 3.

• Gary Lee Lumbra, 64, of Brattleboro. Died Feb. 23 at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital from injuries sustained after being struck by a motor vehicle on Canal Street. Brother of Wanda Krajewski of Bristol, Conn., Priscilla Lackey and husband, Walter, of Wilmington, Marilyn Noble of Brattleboro, and the late Lorraine Bailey, Eleanor Relva, and Reginald Lumbra. Born in Wilmington, the son of Raymond and Glenna (Sheltra) Lumbra, he was raised and educated in Brattleboro, graduating from the Austine School for the Deaf in 1966. For the past three years, he stocked shelves at Walmart in Hinsdale, N.H. Previously, he took care of maintenance at the Windham District Court in Brattleboro. He was steadfast in his walk of faith and was a devoted member of Agape Christian Fellowship, where he spent much of his time volunteering for the church. He also enjoyed mechanical drafting and puttering around his home. Memorial information: A funeral service was held March 3 at Agape Christian Fellowship. Burial will take place in the family lot in Riverview Cemetery in Wilmington in the spring. Donations to the Austine School for the Deaf, 60 Austine Drive, Brattleboro, VT 05301. • Jay Walter Milliken Sr., 77, of West Townshend. Died Feb. 28 at his son's home in Keene, N.H. Husband of Virginia M. Burke for more than 56 years. Father of Jay W. Milliken Jr. and his wife, Susan, of Melrose, Mass.; Robert P Milliken and his wife, Kimberly, of Keene, N.H.; Paul L. Milliken of Salem, Mass.; and Steven Milliken and his wife, Michele, of Templeton, Mass. Brother of Marsha Lavallee of Medford, Mass., and George Pierni of Brockton, Mass. Born in Somerville, Mass., the son of the late Percy L. Milliken and Grace P. Haywood Pierni, he served in the Navy aboard the U.S.S.Rooks. For more than 30 years, he served on the Cambridge (Mass.) Fire Department. He loved to be with his family and he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He and his wife spent summers in the White Mountains after they retired and he especially liked camping in the outdoors. He was proud of his Naval and fire service and, on Memorial Day, he would march in not one but several different parades around Vermont. Memorial information: Funeral services will be held in the spring and will be announced at a later date. • Joan Alexandra Haymarch O'Hara, 78, of Scottsdale, Ariz. Died Feb. 28 after a tough battle with ALS. Wife of Robert O'Hara for more than 36 years. Former wife of David G. Hogan. Mother of Donald Hogan and his wife Patty, of Fort Worth, Texas; Michael Hogan and his wife, Ellen, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and the late Mark Hogan. She and her twin sister, Lois, were born in Stamford, Conn., to the late Alexander and Gladys Haymarch, joining their older sister, Margaret. She spent her childhood in Brattleboro, graduating from Brattleboro High School in 1951. She attended Bates College, in Lewiston, Maine, graduating with a degree in Political Science in 1955, and went to work at the First National Bank of Boston. She and her children ultimately settled in Scottsdale, Ariz., in 1965. It was here that she earned her Masters in Education and ultimately became a teacher at Kiva Elementary School, where she taught for 18 years. She was known for her voracious love of life. She was game for adventures, large and small, and never shied from a challenge, be it getting her pilot's license or becoming a certified scuba diver. She was an avid reader, crossword puzzler, knitter, bowler, golfer, and bridge player. She was a lover of jokes, parties, and being surrounded by friends and family. Memorial information: Services were held March 2 at the Mountain View Presbyterian Church in Scottsdale. Donations to the Hospice of the Valley , 1510 E. Flower St. Phoenix, AZ 85014.

• Diane M. Buchanan Stockwell, 70, of Putney. Died Feb. 21 at home. Mother of Fred Stockwell and his wife, Sarah, of Putney; Vt., Michael Stockwell of Putney; and Sandra and husband, Robert Jutras, of Newfane. Born in Somerville, Mass., the daughter of William Francis Buchanan and Eva Josephine McCullock Buchanan, she was raised in the South End of Boston until the age of five, when the family moved to Putney. She was educated locally and graduated from St. Michael's High School in Brattleboro in 1958, where she was valedictorian. She was employed at various companies, including Quinn Freight Lines, Basketville, Arden Organics, and C.E. Bradley Labs as a bookkeeper. She had a pure love for her cats, and enjoyed reading novels, doing puzzles, and Indy car racing. Memorial information: Per her wishes, there will be no services. Donations to one's local Humane Society for cat care.

• Lindsey K. Hunterwolf of Putney, an English major and member of the Class of 2012 at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, was named to the Dean's List for her outstanding academic achievement during the fall 2011 semester of the 2011-12 year.
