West Brattleboro Association meets on April 19

WEST BRATTLEBORO - On Thursday, April 19, at 8 a.m., the West Brattleboro Association (WBA) will hold its monthly meeting at Sunny's Deli on Western Avenue.

Among the agenda items are plans for both the gathering of religious groups in the area on May 2, and the West B Village Day on Saturday, June 23. The group will also discuss the possibility of having a Brattleboro Chamber mixer in West Brattleboro.

Other agenda items include a discussion of the state's new mobile home legislation and an update on the safety of pedestrians along Western Avenue and Marlboro Road, tying in the group's project to promote changes in the positioning of the Village Green to help with that issue and traffic flow. In addition, the group will review the discussion at a police/fire station meeting.

The WBA is also planning a May walk along the Whetstone and Halladay Brooks to check out possible flood avoidance issues, date to be determined.

The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 14.

Senior luncheon served at Putney Cares

PUTNEY - The monthly Putney Cares senior luncheon will be held at noon on Tuesday, April 24, at the Activity Barn at 54 Kimball Hill Rd.

On the menu: twice-baked potatoes, vegetable soup, rolls and butter, assorted cookies, and coffee and tea.

The lunch will be prepared by Pamela Cubbage, and students from the Grammar School will be serving the lunch and making dessert. The meal is sponsored by Putney Cares and Senior Solutions.

New Bone Builders class to start in Brattleboro

BRATTLEBORO - A new free Bone Builders class is opening in Brattleboro.

Bone Builders is a program of safe, age-appropriate balance and weight exercises designed to improve bone density in areas of the body prone to bone thinning, osteoporosis, and fractures.

The twice-weekly classes are led by trained volunteers. The atmosphere is friendly and supportive.

There will be informational meetings about the new class on Tuesday, April 24 at 10:30 a.m., and 12:30 and 5:15 p.m., at the lower-level exercise room at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital. Enter at the main hospital entrance, take the stairway to the lower level, and make two lefts along the corridors.

Extension Master Gardeners host permaculture program

BRATTLEBORO - Tad Montgomery will be speaking about permaculture, the Brattleboro Permaculture Guild, and local permaculture projects on Wednesday, April 25, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Marlboro College Graduate Center on Vernon Street.

Montgomery has been involved with the permaculture movement since 1985, and is the founder of the Brattleboro Permaculture Guild.

Permaculture is a philosophy of design that seeks to develop sustainable landscapes to provide for human needs and foster biodiversity and resilience. It comes out of a belief that tillage agriculture can be destructive to the soil, and so seeks to minimize plowing.

This will be an open meeting of the Extension Master Gardener Chapter of Windham County. All are welcome.

BMH hosts Mediterranean dinner, healthy eating discussion on May 2

BRATTLEBORO - Brattleboro Memorial Hospital will host a public dinner featuring lowfat Mediterranean fare and a presentation on healthy eating at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2, in the Brew Barry Conference Center.

During the dinner, Burton Tepfer, M.D., a cardiologist at BMH, will discuss how to determine the validity and usefulness of the various studies and research reported every day in the news. In particular, he will review the role of vitamins in heart health.

BF Farmers' Market opens May 11

BELLOWS FALLS - The Bellows Falls Farmers' Market opens for the 2011 season on Friday, May 11, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Waypoint Center.

The market will be held every Friday through Oct. 19. Some spaces remain for vendors; contact market manager Rachel Ware at 802-463-2018 or [email protected].
