Clarifications about GFPC’s healthy initiatives

BELLOWS FALLS — The Greater Falls Prevention Coalition (GFPC) would like to thank reporter Allison Teague and The Commons for taking an interest in our work and the Greater Falls community in the April 25 article “State grant lets GFPC extend its outreach.”

The story covered a number of our initiatives and what we hope to accomplish moving forward. We would like to make a couple of small, but important clarifications.

First, the bimonthly youth radio program “The Underground Hour,” airing on WOOL Radio, 100.1 FM, is coordinated by GFPC and Youth Services. The program is celebrating its one-year anniversary and would certainly not be as successful without the vital partnership with Youth Services.

Secondly, our efforts to support local retailers and markets by increasing local, healthy food options and decreasing tobacco and alcohol advertising through the Healthy Retailer initiative is a collaboration with several partners, including Post Oil Solutions and Windham Farm & Food Network, with additional support from the Healthy Communities Coalition.

Finally, while GFPC was involved in the efforts to pass a Rockingham Town Meeting resolution supporting funding for community gardens, the initiative was actually created by the Community Garden Collaborative and led by Post Oil Solutions and Our Place Community Center, along with several other community partners.

GFPC was one of many and will continue to support these efforts as we focus more on healthy food options and opportunities for community connection.

We again appreciate the coverage and the opportunity for readers to learn about what is happening in the Greater Falls community to promote healthy lifestyles. Collaboration is vital to achieving genuine positive community change, and we want to make sure our partners are recognized for their role.
