Kunin presents talk on women and politics at Next Stage Arts

PUTNEY — Next Stage Arts Project presents former Vermont Gov. Madeleine Kunin on Friday, June 8, at 7:30 p.m.

Kunin will be reading from and discussing her new book, The New Feminist Agenda: Defining the Next Revolution for Women, Work, and Family (Chelsea Green Publishing). Following the presentation will be a question-and-answer session. Kunin will be signing copies of her book, which will also be for sale.

Kunin was Governor of Vermont from 1985 to 1991 and is the first woman to have served three terms as governor, and the fourth woman to be elected governor.

During her tenure, she substantially increased funding for education and concentrated on improving the quality of education. She established the Vermont Housing and Land Conservation Trust Fund, a program that has created affordable housing and land preservation. She initiated Dr. Dynasaur, a program to provide health insurance for Vermont children.

Kunin currently serves as president of the board of the Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC), a nongovernmental organization she founded in 1991. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a regular commentator on Vermont Public Radio, and a Marsh Scholar Professor-at-Large at the University of Vermont. She teaches a seminar on “Women, Politics, and Leadership” and is a frequent guest lecturer.

Among her many professional roles, Kunin served as U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland, the country of her birth, from which she immigrated to the United States with her mother and brother because of the threat of the Holocaust in 1940. She is the author of two previous books, Living a Political Life (Knopf, 1993) and Pearls, Politics, and Power: How Women Can Win and Lead (Chelsea Green, 2008).

Tickets for this event ($15, $12 for students and seniors) are available at Offerings in Putney and Everyone's Books in Brattleboro. Tickets are also available online at www.nextstagearts.org.
