Obituaries

• Muriel L. Andersen, 83, of Keene, N.H. and Sarasota, Fla. Died May 11 in Florida. Wife of the late Arnold “Arnie” Andersen for 61 years. Mother of Karen Andersen of Portsmouth, N.H.; Barbara Dee of Dover, N.H.; Susan Deyo and her husband, Jim, of Brattleboro; Mary Arnault and her husband, Tom, of Rochester, N.H.; and Christine Phillips of Gilbert, Ariz. Sister of John Andersen and his wife, Carole, of Westwood, Mass. Born in Dedham, Mass., the daughter of the late John and Mary (Cherry) Lund, she was known for her sense of humor and her love of family, especially delighting in her grandchildren and their lives. She enjoyed theater, travel, gardening, her many pets, and rooting for the Red Sox and Celtics. She and her husband were avid members of the BoSox club, attending many spring training games and events near their Florida home in retirement. She had a special place in her heart for animals. Memorial information: A funeral service will be held on June 16 at 11 a.m. at St. James Church in Keene, followed by a reception. Burial services will be private. • Roger Boyd Aquadro, 77, of Dummerston. Died May 28 at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital after being stricken ill at the Memorial Day services at Saint Michael's Cemetery. Husband of the late Joy Kinsman Aquadro for 41 years. Father of Dana Aquadro and his wife, Carla, of Dummerston; Janel Aquadro and her husband, Thad Weaver, of Wethersfield, Conn. Brother of Frances Aquadro of Brattleboro and the late Theresa Aquadro Hand. Born in Brattleboro, the son of the late Francis and Calista (Boyd) Aquadro, he was a graduate of Saint Michael's High School, Class of 1953. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict from 1953 to 1956, stationed in Port au Prince, Haiti. He was honorably discharged from active service at the rank of sergeant. He had been employed as a paraprofessional at the Windham Regional Carrer Center in the Building Trade Department, retiring in 2005. From 1960 to 1998, he worked as a foreman in the bindery department at The Book Press in Brattleboro. Active civically, he served on the Dummerston School Board and the Brattleboro Union High School Board, where he served as its chairman. Education and the youth were very important to him. He was an active member of the Marine Corps League, Brattleboro Detachment #789, and member and current president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Brattleboro Aerie #2445. He thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors and all wildlife, hunting, playing horseshoes, music, playing the steel guitar, and spending time with his family especially his four grandchildren and beloved cats. • Beulah Stone Beals, 97, formerly of Brattleboro. Died May 26 at Vernon Green Nursing Home, where she had been a resident for the past several years. Wife of the late Natt A. Codding for 23 years, and the late Charles D. Beals for 33 years. Mother of Natalie C. Rancourt of Brattleboro and Bernard N. Codding of Burlington. Stepmother of Gerald C. Beals of Voluntown, Conn., and the late William Beals. Sister of the late Marion Jones and Lona Gallup, and the late Raymond, Bernard, Weldon, and Roland Stone. Born in South Newfane, the daughter of the late Merton and Edith (Sollows) Stone, she was raised and educated in South Newfane and graduated from Brattleboro High School, Class of 1933. She had been employed at the Holstein-Friesian Association, retiring in December 1979, following nearly 24 years of service with the company. Previously, for eight years she worked as a cashier at the Army & Navy Store in Brattleboro. She was a member of the Keene Women of the Moose Club, Guilford Ladies Aid Society, Guilford Historical Society, the Broad Brook Grange and the former Pocahontas Council #4, Improved Order of Red Men in Brattleboro. For several years, she worked for the Brattleboro Retired Senior Volunteer Program at the Gibson-Aiken Center. Steadfast in her walk of faith, she was a longtime and active member of the Guilford Community Church. She enjoyed knitting, sewing and time spent with her family. • Ira F. Green, 83, of Westminster. Died May 26 at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital. Husband of Phyllis Tulley Green for 47 years. Brother of Maynard Green of Waterbury Center and Myrtle Adams of Waterbury. Born in Waterbury, the son of the late John and Angie (Hayes) Green, he attended schools in Waterbury. He worked at the Vermont State Hospital as a psychiatric aide. He also worked for the state of Connecticut at the Connecticut Valley Hospital in Middletown for 28 years, at the Vermont Welcome Centers, and served in the United States Army. He was a member of Bellows Falls American Legion Post 37 and a life member of VFW Post 1034 in Brattleboro. He enjoyed hunting and playing cribbage. Memorial information: A memorial service was held June 4 in the Chapel at the Vermont Veterans Cemetery in Randolph.

• Carl A. Johnson, 86, of Chesterfield, N.H. Died May 30. Husband of Margaret (Amidon) Johnson. Father of Joanne Azevedo and her husband, Al, of Ceres, Calif.; Carol Johnson-Goulet and husband, George Goulet, of Chesterfield; Patty Haversat and her husband, Eric, of Tewksbury, Mass.; Dr. Carl Johnson and his wife, Joanne. of Bellingham Wash., and Arthur Johnson and his wife, Donna, of Keene, N.H. He was a retired senior vice president at TD BankNorth in Keene. He served as town moderator, budget committee member, and 32-year member of the Chesterfield Volunteer Fire Department and town Public School Foundation. He was a past president of the Board of Directors of the Cheshire YMCA, a chairman and past president of trustees at Cheshire Medical Center, and a life member of the Elks Lodge in Brattleboro. Memorial information: A memorial service was held June 4 at Centre Congregational Church in Brattleboro. • Eda A. Kent, 95, formerly of Wardsboro and Townshend. Died May 31 in Vernon. Wife of the late George A. Kent. Mother of Patricia A. Blair and her husband, Arthur, of Burlington, and the late George A. Kent Jr. Sister of the late Louis Arlington Pittis. Born in Washington, D.C., the daughter of the late Edmund Arlington Pittis and Ida Caroline Borsum. Memorial information: A graveside service was held June 5 at Fairview Cemetery in Wardsboro.

• Hollister F. “Holly” Longe, 84, of Brattleboro. Died May 30 at home. Husband of the late Theresa O'Connor for 61 years. Father of Michael F. Longe of Brattleboro, Rory F. Longe of Westminster, Claire Longe of Brattleboro, and the late Marie Wright. Born in Montgomery Center, the son of the late Herman and Cecile (Lavender) Longe, he was raised and educated in Brattleboro, graduating from St. Michael's High School. He served in the Navy during World War II aboard the aircraft carrier USS Valley Forge. For many years, he was employed as a licensed electrician and maintenance worker at Vermont Academy on the Saxtons River campus. Previously, he worked as a boiler room operator and chief engineer for the Brattleboro Retreat. Following his retirement, he served as the caretaker for St. Michael's Cemetery. He was an active member of American Legion Post 5, Veterans of Foreign Wars Carl Dessaint Post 1034, Knights of Columbus, Leo Council #917, and B.P.O. Elks Lodge #1499, all of Brattleboro. For many years, he coached Small Fry baseball in Brattleboro. He enjoyed camping, playing cards, especially the game “500,” driving for Auto Mall, and time shared with his family, especially his grandchildren. Memorial information: A funeral Mass was held at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Putney on June 4, with burial with full military honors in St. Michael's Cemetery. • Karen Lee Lucier, 56, of Keene, N.H. Died May 24 at the Kingsbury Cancer Center in Keene of ovarian cancer. Daughter of Donald M. Lucier of Willsboro, N.Y., and Kathryn T. Lucier of West Brattleboro. Sister of Karla Young of Lexington, N.C., Donna Scully of Vernon, Douglas Lucier of Spofford, N.H., and the late Darlene Marie Lucier in 2003. Born in Brattleboro, she took ill with meningitis at the age of 6, which left her with the ability to only move her eyes. Intensive rehabilitation helped her to recover, but she started having seizures which left her paralyzed on her left side, unable to speak or walk. She was institutionalized for many years but, with the help of Monadnock Developmental Services, she eventually was able to spend the last decade of her life living independently with their assistance. Through all she had endured in her life, she still had a wonderful sense of humor and a heart of gold that endeared others to her. Memorial information: A service will be held at a later date. • David A. Manley, 80, of Hinsdale, N.H. Died May 27 at Maplewood Nursing Home in Winchester, N.H. Husband of BillieMae Johnson for 59 years. Father of Robert Maney and his wife, Patricia, of Enfield, Conn.; Marc Manley and his wife, Susan, of Putney; and Jody Garland and her husband, Matthew, of Hinsdale, N.H. Brother of Kenneth Manley of Marshfield, Mass. Born in Brattleboro, the son of the late Robert Arthur and Florence Grace (Adams) Manley, he attended local schools and graduated from Brattleboro High School in 1950. He served in the Vermont National Guard during the Korean War. He was employed by New England Telephone, and later AT&T, as a technician for 35 years until his retirement. He was also an inspector for the state of New Hampshire, overseeing greyhound and harness racing for more than 35 years. During his lifetime, he was an avid hunter and fisherman, and belonged to several sportsmen clubs in Brattleboro and Keene, N.H. He loved going to Pisgah Park, helping with trail systems, building bridges, cutting trails, and fishing on the pond in the summer and winter. He was a fan of the Red Sox and New England Patriots. He also was a neighborhood small engine repairman, always willing to help or lend a tool when needed. Memorial information: A memorial service was held June 2 at Ker-Westerlund Funeral Home in Brattleboro. • Joan Carol Berry McConnel, 66, formerly of Townshend. Died May 25 at Northside-Forsyth Hospital in Cumming, Ga. Mother of Heather McConnel Goukler, and her husband, Rick, of Cumming, Ga. Sister of Ned and Phil Berry. Born in Hartford, Conn., daughter of the late Virginia Reardon Berry and Edwin D. Berry, she grew up in Connecticut. She graduated from Hall High School and attended a two year college in Connecticut. She worked for Aetna Life and Casualty in Hartford, Conn., for many years. She later moved to Townshend, where she worked for Mary Meyer. She was an avid gardener and a wonderful golfer. She volunteered for many years for Grace Cottage Hospital and Foundation. She moved to Stuart, Fla., and later Cumming, Ga., to be closer to her daughter and her four grandchildren where she was a part of their daily lives and activities. She was president of the Women's Golf Association at Windermere Country Club and a volunteer at Haw Creek Elementary School that her grandchildren attended. She will be remembered as a loving sister, mother, grandmother and friend to the many people she touched. • Henry G. Rosner Jr., 80, of Brattleboro. Died May 24 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. Husband of Barbara C. Hinsley for nearly 60 years. Father of Henry G. Rosner III of San Dimas, Calif., Michael R. Rosner of Vernon, and Richard A. Rosner of Belchertown, Mass. Brother of Jeanne Proto of Lake Tahoe, Calif., Austin Rosner of Riverview, Fla., and the late Bernadette Begin and Judith Ann Rosner. He was born in Spencer, Mass., the son of the late Henry and Rose Rosner. He grew up in Spencer, attending local schools. He was a decorated veteran of the Korean War, having served with the Army. Memorial information: A memorial Mass was held on May 30 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Brattleboro. Private interment will be held at a later date. Donations to the Alzheimers Foundation of America.

• John Robert Waite, 72, of Brattleboro. Died May 28 at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Mass., from complications of pneumonia. Former husband of Carol Taylor. Father of Amy Goldberg and husband, Joshua, of Chesterfield, N.H. Longtime companion of Sonja Hurley of Brattleboro. Born in Brattleboro, the son of Merrill and Marjorie “Phyllis” (Hall) Waite, he attended elementary schools in Brattleboro and Leland & Gray Seminary in Townshend. In January 1957, he enlisted in the Navy and served in the Middle East, stationed in Beirut, Lebanon. After he was honorably discharged from active service in November 1960, he worked as a crane operator for 30 years, employed by Beck & Bellucci Construction Co. of Franklin, N.H. He also worked for several other construction companies in the area. He was a member of American Legion Post 5, a life member of VFW Carl M. Desaint Post 1034, and held membership in the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks, Brattleboro Lodge #1499. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, cooking, and time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed socializing and was known for his many stories. . Memorial information: A memorial Mass was held on June 1 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Brattleboro. Burial with full military honors will follow in Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery on Orchard Street. • David Paul Weaver, 65, of Brattleboro. Died May 30 at his home of cancer. Husband of Linda Weaver for 44 years. Father of Suzanne Cross and her partner, James Buck, of Vernon, and Deborah Spindler and her husband, Craig, of Hinsdale, N.H. Born in Brattleboro, the son of the late Quentin and Eve Weaver, he attended Pioneer Valley Regional School and graduated from Brattleboro Union High School. He was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed hunting and fishing and working in his vegetable garden. He was also a huge Red Sox fan and an even bigger Patriots fan. He was a self-employed painter, owner of Dave's Painting in Brattleboro. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. For 33 years, he coached his own Small Fry team, Dave's Painting, and was recently recognized by having a dugout named in his honor. He was on the board of the Westgate Tenants Association and was instrumental in Westgate becoming tenant-owned. For many years, he was the Brattleboro town service officer, and was also president of CABA. On April 30, 2012, he was recognized for his contributions by receiving the SEVCA Community Catalyst Award and was later recognized by Brattleboro Area Affordable Housing for his many years of tireless community work. Memorial information: A memorial service was held June 3 at the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Brattleboro.

• The following local students received degrees from St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. - Violet S.L. Batcha of Putney was awarded a degree in government, with a minor in gender and sexuality studies; Amanda B. Chase of West Dover was awarded a degree in psychology, with a minor in sport studies/exercise science; and Bond M. Longley of South Londonderry was awarded a degree in global studies, with a minor in African studies.

• Helena Gomez Cordoba of Londonderry received a bachelor's degree in art history, cum laude from Providence College.

• Andrea Durant of Dummerston received a bachelor's degree in political science, magna cum laude from the University of Rhode Island.

• Livia Kelly of Putney graduated from Beloit (Wis.) College with a bachelor's degree in Russian.

• Kayden Manning of Vernon received a bachelor's degree in international leadership, cum laude from Marietta (Ohio) College.

• The following local students were named to the Spring 2012 semester Dean's List at Keene State College: Latisha C. Akley of Vernon; Brandon Allyn Chabot of West Dover; Sompote Chernthong, Kiya Labadie, Ignazio Enzo Macaluso, and Elisha Rose Wamsley of Brattleboro; and MacKenzie Carter Prasch of South Londonderry.

• Shannon Weatherup of Vernon was named to the Spring 2012 Dean's List at American International College in Springfield, Mass.

• Chloe Ingalls of Dummerston, a member of the class of 2013, has been named to the Dean's Honors list for the 2012 spring semester at Connecticut College in New London, Conn.

• Caleb E. Wiley, an early childhood education and special education major from South Londonderry, was named to the spring 2012 Dean's List at Lebanon Valley (Pa.) College.

Honors

• The Vermont Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Inc., honored Mark Richards of Dummerston, along with other valued Vermont Center donors on May 15 during a night of recognition held at the Austine school. Richards has been a donor to many nonprofits and charitable causes in the Brattleboro area over the years, and it was his generous donation, through The Richards Group, which funded the start up of the Little Arrows Early Childhood Center on the Austine campus.
