Brooks Library summer reading program begins June 25

BRATTLEBORO — Brooks Memorial Library has summer reading programs for kids from birth through age 18. Registration for all programs began this week and ends on Saturday, June 23.

All children, including children who are read to by others, are invited to participate in “Dream Big ...READ!” Children set their own reading goal for the six-week program, which begins Monday, June 25, and ends Saturday, Aug. 4.

Participants will receive a reading record, a book bag, and bookmark at registration and children who meet their summer reading goal will receive a coupon for a free small pizza from Domino's Pizza of Brattleboro.

Children ages 10 to 12 can join the library's Own the Night club. Children who complete weekly tasks by locating information both in the library and on the Children's Room website will be entered into the weekly drawings. Everyone who complete all six tasks will be entered into a grand prize drawing.

Brand new this year is the Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star reading program for children from birth to age 2. Parents complete 12 activities with their child, such as attending Rhyme Time or reading a Mother Goose book, to receive a “Llama, Llama” board book by local author and illustrator Anna Dewdney.

Coldwell Banker Bellville Realty's Monday Movie Matinee series is back for a seventh year. Visitors can bring a lunch and stop by the Meeting Room at 1 p.m. for a feature length movie on Mondays, beginning June 25 and running through Aug. 13. Movies are rated G or PG, and run approximately 90 minutes. Call 802-254-5290, ext. 110, for movie titles or pick up a flyer in the Children's Room.

Teens can visit the Main Floor where there is a large display of young adult books. The summer reading program called “Own the Night” is open to all Brattleboro area teens. They can register at the library, pick up a book bag, bookmark, and reading log, and set a goal of reading for at least 2 hours per week for 6 weeks. They will get an incentive prize as well. Contact the library at 802-254-5290, ext. 0 for more information.

Residents of any town outside of Brattleboro, who are students at any Brattleboro school are eligible for a free student library card. Ask at the circulation desks. Besides books, the library has DVDs and audiobooks, which can be downloaded to iPods or smart phones.
