Obituaries

• Edward W. “Ed” Aplin Sr., 72, of Brattleboro. Died July 4 at his home. Husband of Cheryl King Aplin for nearly 47 years. Father of Edward Aplin, Jr. of Nelson, N.H., Jason Aplin and his wife, Hilary, of Dover, Melissa Looman of Dummerston, and the late Donald Edward Aplin. Brother of Barbara Aplin of Brattleboro, Dorothy Cousins of Sharon, Conn., Pauline Stark of East Randolph, Betty Spicer of Utica, N.Y., and the late David Aplin, Joyce Beam, and Mary Harlow. Born at home in Putney, the son of the late Donald and Leone (Fuller) Aplin, he was raised and educated in Putney and spent his early years assisting with the day-to-day operation of his family's farm, The Bonnyvale Farm, a property that had been in his family since the 1700's. Throughout the years, his boyhood home held a special place in his heart. He served in the Vermont Army National Guard, and worked for 40 years as a maintenance supervisor at Putney Paper Co., retiring in 2006. He and his brother-in-law Fred King co-owned and operated a general contracting business, K and A Builders of Putney. He was a former member of the Putney Volunteer Fire Department. He was an avid NASCAR fan and loved cars and trucks. He loved classic cars, especially the Ford Mustang, of which he owned several, his first being a 1964 Mustang coupe. He enjoyed vegetable and fruit gardening, vacationing on the coast of Maine, and time shared with his family, especially his three children and five grandchildren. Memorial information: A funeral service was held July 8 at First Congregational Church in Brattleboro, with burial in Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery. • Ann E. Laflam Clifford, 74, of West Brattleboro. Died June 27 after a battle with cancer. Wife of Paul W. Clifford for 54 years. Mother of Paul Clifford and his wife, Eyvonne, of Spofford, N.H., and Todd Clifford and his wife, Jean, of Brattleboro. Sister of Frank Laflam of Brattleboro and the late Eugene Laflam, William Laflam, Fred Babbitt, and Dolly Willette. Born in Brattleboro, the daughter of the late William Laflam and Eleanor Grassi Babbitt, she was raised in Brattleboro and graduated from Brattleboro High School. She was a homemaker and caregiver for her husband and two sons. She was a kindhearted woman who always made everyone feel welcome with her bright smile and soft voice. Memorial information: Memorial services will be announced at a later date.

• Jeanne A. Gill, 65, of Brattleboro. Died June 20 at Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend from complications due to a heart condition. Wife of Graham Gill for 30 years. Mother of Devon and Britainy Gill. Sister of Joanne Laflam and Jackie Trombley. Born in Barton, the daughter of the late Walter and Simone Brault Currier. She graduated from St. Michael's Catholic School in Brattleboro in 1966. She worked for a telephone company before moving to Oklahoma, and then returned to Brattleboro in 1969. She worked for Vermont Yankee, then opened Reflections, a coffee shop, with her parents. She later bought and ran Kings Bowling Alley on Putney Road while working at Vermont Yankee before retiring in 2010. Memorial information: A funeral Mass was held on July 7 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Brattleboro. Donations to Grace Cottage Hospital, P.O. Box 1, Townshend, VT 05353.

• Margaret Emily Newton Jones, 62, of Winchester, N.H. Died June 28 after a battle with cancer. Wife of Alan C. Jones Sr. for 31 years and the late Michael Butynski for five years. Mother of Jason Taylor Jones and his wife, Stephanie Faith, and Kristena Ann Jones and her significant other, Brad Starkey. Sister of Mark Newton. Born in Brattleboro, she was raised on the family farm in Bernardston, Mass. She attended Bernardston Elementary School, and Pioneer Valley High School in Northfield, Mass., class of 1968. She then attended Greenfield (Mass.) Community College, and graduated with an associate's degree with honors in mental health in 1972. She worked at the Florida Sheriff's Boys Ranch in Live Oak, Fla., and was a houseparent at Sunshine Village in Chicopee, Mass. She later was a social worker and physical therapy aide at Vernon Green Nursing Home. Other jobs included news correspondent at the Brattleboro Reformer and The Keene Sentinel, a supervisor for U.S. Census Bureau in Concord, N.H., newspaper delivery driver for the Sentinel and the Manchester Union Leader, and secretary at Easter Seals, Inc. in Keene. She was also a driver's education instructor for many students in Cheshire County for more than a decade. She loved nature, lakes, rivers, and flowers. Memorial information: A memorial service was held at Vernon Advent Christian Church on July 7.

• John Keith Lake, 69, of Essex, Md., formerly of Brattleboro. Died June 24. Husband of Diane Mary Lake, Father of Robert Lake, Darlene Goding, Joseph Lake, Shirley Goding, Jeffrey Lake and his wife Norene, Stephen Goding and his wife Debra, and Katherine Lake. Brother of Bruce Lake, Richard Lake, and Joanne Gray. With his wife, they opened Jad's Restaurant on Canal Street in Brattleboro and ran it from 1979 until 1989. They then moved to Maryland, where opened Jad's Caddyshack Lounge. Memorial information: A memorial service was held July 10 at West Brattleboro Baptist Church.

• Mary Melissa (Young) Lamoureux, 75, of Brat­tleboro. Died after an accident while on vacation in New Brunswick, Canada. Wife of the late George-Henri Lamoureux for nearly 50 years. Mother of Sus­an Gloria Parris of Brattleboro, John-Paul Lamoureux his wife, Lisa, of Hollis­ton, Mass., and Andrew Lamoureux of Brattleboro. Sister of the late Donald Young. She was born in North Hollywood, Calif., during when, she liked to point out, “Holly­wood still had its glamour.” During her teens, she was an usher in a movie theater, and she en­joyed recount­ing memories of Hollywood pre­mieres. She had encyclope­dic recall of classic films. At 16, she met her future hus­band when he climbed the fence of his Army base and crash­ed a party at her best friend's home to meet her. She later defied her father's order and left college at 19 to marry him. The Lamoureaux's both loved the ocean and spent many happy hours on boats and ferries. For her 75th birthday, her children gave her a gift she had always wanted, a cruise. The last day of her life was one of her best: she was on her first cruise, accompanied by her granddaughter Rose, on a beautiful sunny day off the coast of Canada. She and her husband loved many children during their lifetime: their own, their grandchildren, and oth­ers whom she looked after in their home in Wilmington for over 20 years. Later, Mary worked at Sam's Department Store and RSVP in Brattleboro, and made many friends at both places. She will be remembered for her kind nature, her genuine love and care for children, and her willing­ness to help anyone in need. Memorial information: A memorial service was held at July 7 at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Wilmington. She will be interred next to her husband in the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center at a later date. • James “Jeep” Eugene Machleid, 66, of Spofford, N.H. Died June 26 at his home on Spofford Lake. The son of the late James Arthur and Josehine Acuff Machleid, he built his own home from the ground up, overlooking his beloved lake. He enjoyed friends, pyrotechnics, welding, electronics, cooking and baking, dogs, boats, flowers, birds, and vintage Mercedes. He attended Franconia College and received a psychology degree from Windham College and a Master's in special education from the University of Hartford. He taught at the Winston Prouty School for Child Development, served as a selectman in Chesterfield, and was a sales manager for Vermont and New Hampshire printing firms. He was frugal with everything but his knowledge, time, and heart. Memorial information: A private service will be held. Donations to an educational institution or an animal shelter of one's choice.

• Doris Marie “Connie” (Cyrs) Wetherell, 86, of Brattleboro. Died July 2 at Pine Heights. Wife of the late Kenneth G. Wetherell for 51 years. Mother of Army Lt. Col. (retired) Joseph Wetherell and his wife, Cheryl, of Scranton, Pa.; Air Force Lt. Col. (retired) Michael Wetherell and his wife, Holly, of Middlesex; Barbara McGregor and her husband, Allan, of Montpelier; and the late Teresa Mayotte. Sister of Norman Cyrs, and his wife, Helen, of South Hadley, Mass. Born in Springfield, Vt., the daughter of the late Bert E. and Christine (Longe) Cyrs, she grew up in Springfield, where she enjoyed walking everywhere and ice skating, which she continued into her late 60s. She graduated from Springfield High School in 1944, and worked at Fellows Gearshaper. She came as a new bride to Brattleboro, where she and her husband raised their four children in a little house on Fuller Drive. She was a member of St. Michael's Church in Brattleboro. She was employed many years at the service desk at The Giant Store, and worked 19 years as a sales clerk at Emerson's. In past years, she spent many hours volunteering at Eden Park (now Pine Heights). She loved to push grandchildren in strollers, to work in her flower garden, and to read and write stories; she even published a short story and autobiography. Memorial information: A funeral Mass was held on July 7 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, with burial in St. Michael's Cemetery. Donations to St. Michael's School, 48 Walnut St., Brattleboro, VT 05301.

• The following students have been named to the Dean's List at the University of New Hampshire for the spring 2012 semester: Nicholas Haskell, Robert Meyer, and Rebecca Procter of Brattleboro, and Amanda Oles of Vernon all earned Highest Honors; Drummond Biles and Adam Harrison of Brattleboro, Ashley Meyer of Brookline and Kvehl McDermott of Putney earned High Honors; and Kelsey Patterson of Brattleboro and Quentin Young of Westminster Station earned Honors.

• Monica Speranza of Vernon and Carleen Busick of Wardsboro were named to the Dean's List at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., for the spring 2012 semester. Speranza is a member of the Class of 2012 and majored in communication/journalism, while Busick is a member of the Class of 2013 and is majoring in English.

• Carla Yudin, a psychology major from Guilford, was named to the Spring 2012 Dean's List at Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I.

• Jacquelyn Cawley of Brattleboro has been named to the University of Delaware's Dean's List for Spring 2012.

• Wendy Toney of Brattleboro was named to the President's List at Southern New Hampshire University for the Spring 2012 semester.

• Janette Wambere of Wilmington was part of a team of Binghamton University students, led by William Ziegler, associate professor of computer science in the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science, was recently selected as first-place winner in the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Design Competition for Universities.

School news

• Morgan Baker of East Dummerston, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Francis Baker, II, was among 240 graduates at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Conn. at the school's 122nd Commencement on June 3. Baker will attend Rollins College in the fall.

Transitions

• Jeremy Schrauf of West Wardsboro has been elected to the board of directors of Vermont Public Television. Schrauf has taught economics at University at Albany, the off-campus program for Johnson State College and the Community College of Vermont. He worked for many years for the state of New York as unit chief for the Budget Division, as assistant director of the Governor's Office of Employee Relations and as director of research and statistics for the Department of Labor. He is active in local and statewide work with United Church of Christ and Boy Scouts of America. He has been on the boards of the Deerfield Valley Food Pantry, West River Habitat for Humanity, and the Southeastern Vermont Watershed Alliance. He was honored in June by Vermont Public Television after serving on its Community Council since 2006, where he held the offices of vice chair, chair, and past chair.

• Brattleboro Memorial Hospital and other medical service providers in the area recognized and toasted the careers of 12 retiring physicians during a reception on June 28 at The Putney Inn. The honored physicians, in alphabetical order, were David J. Albright, MD; John R. Bookwalter, MD; Hilke T. Breder, MD; John T. Chard, MD; David L. Fagelson, MD; Lynn Herzog, MD; Thomas R. Hoskins, MD; Robert D. Nassau, MD; Clyde A. Newton, MD; Walter Slowinski, MD; Burton D. Tepfer, MD; and John Y. Trumper, MD. Many of the physicians have been part of the community since the late 1960s and early 1970s, and all together have provided care for approximately 400 years.

• At its June 27 breakfast meeting, the Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary Club officially welcomed incoming club president Sandy Shriver.

Shriver becomes the 17th president to preside over the club since the club was chartered in 1995.

Shriver will serve as the club's president through next June.

The Sunrise Rotary Club meets every Wednesday at 7:15 a.m. at the Fairway Tavern at the Brattleboro Country Club.

More than 40 members of the club work toward improving the community through friendships, fun, and cooperation. The public is always welcome.
