Union Institute & University hosts Weekend Program information session

BRATTLEBORO — Union Institute & University (UI & U), a nonprofit, accredited, private university offering flexible degree programs designed for engaged and busy adults, will host an information session Monday, Oct. 29, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., at the Brattleboro Academic Center, 3 University Way. Pizza and beverages will be served.

Faculty member Ben Mitchell will be on hand, hosting a frank discussion on “The Challenges and Benefits of Returning to School as an Adult.” Mitchell is an affiliated professor and graduate of Union Institute & University, and has also taught at Landmark College and Smith College.

“In the fifteen years since I graduated from Union Institute & University, my professional life has seen an extraordinary metamorphosis,” Mitchell said. “I went from struggling to get a job as a para-professional in the school system to training para-professionals as part of my work for Landmark College. I went from having a secret interest in writing songs, poems, and stories to publishing my first book of poems, Only the Sound Itself, in 2010, with a second coming out this fall.

“I went from being interested in radical politics to being a regular candidate with the Liberty Union Party. I went from being a college dropout, struggling with learning disabilities, to being a recognized leader in the field of learning disabilities. This transformation, from aspiration, to participation, to achievement is the transformation I see at the heart of the B.A. Program at Union Institute & University.”

Admissions staff will be available to answer questions about the following concentrations offered through the bachelor of arts program, including Arts, Writing & Literature; Education, Environmental Studies & Sustainability; Global Studies, History & Culture; Psychology & Human Development, and a self-designed degree option.

Information will also be available regarding the undergraduate and post-baccalaureate Teacher Licensure track. Attendees can also learn about financial aid options.

UI & U offers a liberal transfer policy that grants credits for college-level (through work and life experiences) in an effort to bring adult students closer to achieving their degree.
