Board to hold hearing for Jasmes Road re-designation

WESTMINSTER — The Selectboard has voted to hold a hearing and site visit at James Road on Dec. 18 in response to residents' request that the town accept the private road as a Class 3 highway.

The dead-end road begins at Morse Brook Road.

By state law, a highway with this designation is “negotiable under normal conditions all seasons of the year by a standard manufactured pleasure car."

According to policy adopted in 2002, the town will upgrade private roads to a Class 3 designation after the road meets those standards at their own expense.

The policy states that after the hearing, if the Selectboard determines that it wishes to proceed “and if the highway right of way cannot be determined, [the board] shall cause the highway to be surveyed, and shall place suitable monuments to properly mark the boundaries of the survey.”

Residents of Camp Road and Camp Road Extension are also undergoing the process of seeking Class 3 designation.

According to meeting minutes for the Aug. 29 site visit, board members and participants paid “particular attention to culverts, drainage, road width, and suitable turnaround areas."
