After Fukushima, another anniversary

RE: “As you read 'Namie,' think 'Brattleboro'” [Viewpoint, March 6]:

It might be a little early, but there is another solemn anniversary that all New Englanders must keep close to their hearts: Aug. 18, 1967, the 46th anniversary of Red Sox star Tony Conigliaro getting hit in the face with a baseball.

Unbelievably, the baseballs used today in the major leagues are the same design as the one thrown by Angels' pitcher Jack Hamilton at Tony C's head in 1967. Due to insatiable corporate greed, Major League Baseball continues to expose players and fans to the risk of losing the sight in their left eye.

The media, under the spell of corporate cash, will not tell the public the truth about the risk from these projectiles being hurled at innocent people by highly developed pitching arms or off the end of a bat. Unsuspecting fans are encouraged to sit in the direct path of these missiles.

It's time for us to tell these fat cats that we will no longer be lambs used as a sacrifice at their bloody altars of greed.

This foolish American game for profit must end and the stadiums shuttered to keep our future generations safe. Then we can build sensible soccer stadiums that use larger, softer, slower moving balls and be more like our honored European ancestors.
