BCTV announces Spring Video Production Classes

BRATTLEBORO — Brattleboro Community Television announces its spring video production classes. Learn to make videos to share with local residents on cable channels 8 and 10. All classes are held at the Brattleboro Municipal Center, 230 Main St., suite 303.

• Digital Storytelling: An advanced guide to editing techniques, Saturday, April 6, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. In this workshop, participants will begin by considering several short documentary, art, experimental, and fiction video pieces as a way of looking at the storytelling techniques, camera and visualization techniques, and editing concepts that make them work. That is, the grammar, vocabulary, and syntax of the moving image.

Part 1: Video as Storytelling. Importance of the story, and different ways to tell it. The grammar and vocabulary of video/film (shots, sequences, framing, light, sound) and their uses to tell a story. The shot, framing, language, and meaning; frame design, the cut, dissolve, and shot transitions and juxtapositions. Reflection and critique for feedback and refinement of story elements. Analysis, reaction, and suggestions: how to ask for and get what helps.

Part 2: Looking at participants' finished (or nearly finished) pieces. Participants are asked to bring in pieces they have finished or are working on, and aspects they would like feedback/critique on.

Prerequisite: Bring one video piece to be shared in class. Instructor: Michael Hanish. Cost: $20.
