Guilford artist uses running as inspiration for paintings

BRATTLEBORO — John S. Dimick of Guilford is best known around the area for his years of coaching successful cross-country teams at Brattleboro Union High School.

Since retiring from his lengthy career of teaching and long distance running two years ago, he has returned to one of his first loves: painting.

In “A Runner's Next Steps,” an exhibition of watercolor and oil paintings that will be on display during April at the Latchis Theatre, Dimick shows work that was inspired by the fleeting impressions he gathered while running and cycling through the back roads and trails of Vermont and surrounding areas.

His paintings have been described as powerful and alive, and have moved many in their overall effect as well as their color, brush stroke, and texture.

The show runs from April 1 through 30, with an artist reception during Gallery Walk on April 5 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. (note earlier hours).

Dimick will donate a portion of sales proceeds to Latchis Arts for the “Seating and Ceiling Campaign” to restore the main theater.
