DUMMERSTON — The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), announces its spring series of morning and afternoon lectures, to begin on April 1. This spring's lectures are devoted to the Broadway musical and the Arab Spring upheavals in the Mideast.
In the morning series of six lectures, Zeke Hecker will discuss musical theater on Broadway beginning with “Showboat” and the musicals through the 1920s, and culminating with the rock musicals of the 1970s.
Hecker, a longtime English teacher at Brattleboro Union High School, is a composer and student of musical theater.
The afternoon programs will look at the origins and implications of the Arab Spring as it has played out in five countries: Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Algeria, and Morocco. The six lectures will be given by Lynette Rummel, a professor of politics at Marlboro College with a special interest in North Africa.
Lectures will take place on successive Mondays in April and May, with the exception of April 15, on which there will be no program. Morning lectures will run from 10 a.m. to noon. Afternoon lectures will run from 1 to 3 p.m.
All lectures will be held at the Southeast Vermont Learning Collaborative, 471 Vermont Rte. 5, in Dummerston. Parking and handicapped access are available. Light refreshments will be served.
The lectures are produced by the Brattleboro OLLI chapter, now in its 10th year. OLLI is a nationwide membership organization sponsoring programs for people aged 50 and over who wish to continue their education without tests, papers, or grades.
Payment of full membership dues ($50) entitles members to attend all 12 lectures in the present series. Couples are welcome to join as full members at a discounted rate of $80. Lectures are also open to nonmembers at $6 per lecture.
