Wanted: Lovers and Other Strangers

NEWFANE — The Newfane Playhouse will hold auditions for the Renée Taylor and Joseph Bologna comedy, “Lovers and Other Strangers,” to be held at the Brattleboro Savings & Loan community room on Wednesday, April 3, and Friday, April 5, at 7 p.m.

There will also be an audition on Sunday, April 7, at 2 p.m., at the Newfane Union Hall, off Route 30 near the village green.

This production is directed by Robert DuCharme of Brookline, with performance dates Thursday, May 23, through Sunday, May 26.

According to DuCharme, this is a perfect play for people who love to act, or for anyone who has always wanted to act but hasn't yet found the time.

There are five scenes with about 10 pages of script per scene. There can be five separate casts. There are no rehearsals on Fridays or Saturdays, he said.

The five comedies touch on the general subject of the “superiority of women.” According to DuCharme, critics had a hard time figuring out the funniest.

The first shows a young man preparing to seduce a woman, only to have the tables turned on him. The second involves a married couple who can't figure out whose turn it is to commence love making. The third opens on a girl's apartment at 4 a.m., when her fiancé comes in to say he's a nervous wreck and can't go through with their wedding. The fourth takes place in the bathroom at an anniversary party. In the last, a man and wife who have fought together for some 30-odd years try to save their son's marriage by confession of their failings.

The various parts range from the ages of 18 to 50. People who are interested in working on the production, stage manager, rehearsal assistant, sound, lights, props, house managing, box office, or ushering are also encouraged to sign up at one of the auditions.
