Former softball players invited to field dedication

DUMMERSTON — Since the early 1980s, the membership of the Brattleboro Area Softball Association, Inc. (BASA) has generously contributed money and manpower to the improvement of the Brattleboro Recreation and Parks Department softball fields at Living Memorial Park.

Recently, BASA fulfilled a longtime dream and pledged $125,000 toward the development of the West River Park and the creation of a regulation-lighted softball field there.

On April 29, we officially started league play with games at this complex.

On Saturday, May 18 (with a rain date on the 19th), the West River Park will have its official grand opening. All members of the Brattleboro area softball community (current and past) and the community at large are invited to attend.

There will be food, beverages, seating, a tent, and events, including a legends' game.

This is a special invitation to our many softball-retired legends to spend an afternoon playing a little softball on this field, which for so many years they hoped would become a reality; to see old teammates; to remember the good times; and to enjoy the camaraderie of the game.

We plan to take the opportunity of the grand opening to recognize and appreciate your contribution to the larger Brattleboro community by having you join us in the celebration of this day.

There will be happenings all day starting at 9 a.m. The legends' game will begin at 12:30 p.m. and stop at 2 p.m. for the official grand opening ceremony.

Bring your glove, wooden or metal bat, and uniform shirt, if you can find them. We'll provide the medical personnel. If your body and spirit are willing, the game will continue after the ribbon cutting.

We hope to see you there.
