Shumlin to be commencement speaker at Marlboro College's 66th Graduation on May 19

MARLBORO — Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin will address the 61 graduates of the Class of 2013 at Marlboro College at its 66th graduation ceremony on Sunday, May 19.

“Gov. Shumlin is an ideal choice to address our thoughtful, motivated, and well-prepared graduates this year,” said college president Ellen McCulloch-Lovell. “He is keenly aware of the talents our graduates possess and the importance of utilizing those precious skills in a democratic society."

Shumlin was first elected governor in 2010, and re-elected in 2012. His career in public service spans more than three decades, having started at the age of 24 when he was elected to serve on the Putney Selectboard.

In 1990, Gov. Madeleine Kunin appointed Shumlin to fill a vacant seat in the Vermont House of Representatives, where he served for three years. He then served Windham County for eight terms in the Vermont Senate.

In addition to the graduates, Shumlin will address Marlboro Board President Dean Nicyper '76, McCulloch-Lovell, Dean of Faculty Richard Glezjer, and senior speaker Evan Lamb, '13.

The commencement will stream live at www.marlboro.edu/commencement beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Also on the program, Marlboro will award Shumlin an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters, and Julie Johnson Kidd, president of the Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation since 1980, an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters for her stalwart dedication and support of the liberal arts.
