Latchis Theatre Main Stage presents concert of local bands to benefit seats and ceiling campaign

BRATTLEBORO — The time has come to give the main theater at the Latchis a big send-off before it closes for renovations, and Latchis Arts aims to do it up right with a showcase of local musical talent never before seen on one stage.

Rock The Latchis! presents four of the area's top bands Wednesday, July 31, at 8 p.m., the day before the main theater closes for renovations. Hot music and dancing in the aisles comes courtesy of Alafia, Bella's Bartok, Colby Dix, and Jatoba.

Alafia, an 11-piece ensemble of horns, guitars, bass, and percussion, brings a world beat bent on creating an irresistible polyrhythmic dance groove.

Bella's Bartok, consisting of piano, guitar, horns and percussion, is definitely danceable gypsy punk: absurd and charming, with a distinct bohemian vibe.

Colby Dix is a solo performer, but close your eyes and you wouldn't know it. Looping layers of sound as he plays, Dix delivers indie rock, alt-country, and pop in a style all his own.

Jatoba plays “groove-grass,” an amalgamation of styles and genres laid down with quick bluegrass tempos driven by rockabilly-like bass lines and hit-the-ceiling vocal harmonies.

This concert is a benefit for Latchis Arts' ongoing $550,000 seats and ceiling campaign, “The Campaign for The Heavens and The Earth.”

The main theater will be closed for renovations this August and September, though the facility's three other screening rooms will still be open for first-run, art, and independent film showings.
