• In Brattleboro (Memorial Hos­pital), Oct. 17, 2013, a daughter, Molly Louise Boyd, to Debbie (Stepp) and Jim Boyd of West Chesterfield, N.H.; granddaugh­ter to Sam and Sue Stepp, the late Eugene Boyd, and the late Bren­da Hoskeer.

School news

• The Brattleboro Elks #1499 recently honored 4 students from Brattleboro Union High School as their Students of the Month for October. Hillary Renaud, a 12th-grader and daughter of Michael and Shirley Renaud of Vernon, hopes to move on to college following graduation next spring to study civil engineering. She serves on the Yearbook Committee and holds a part-time job. She enjoys horses and race cars. Nina LaMay, a 10th-grader and daughter of John LaMay, loves providing care of animals and hopes to work in the field of veterinary medicine. She belongs to the AWARE group at the school. She enjoys shooting, poetry, and horseback riding. Daniel Baldwin-Page, a ninth-grader and son of Morey Page and Beth Baldwin of Brattleboro belongs to the Boys and Girls Club of Brattleboro and very much enjoys basketball and baseball. Lucas Rawson, a 10th-grader and son of Dennis Rawson and Deirdre Baker of Brattleboro, also belongs to the Boys and Girls Club of Brattleboro and enjoys a wide variety of sports and video games. He is proud of his academic improvements, particularly within the last year.

• Ian Allwood, 55, formerly of Bellows Falls. Died Oct. 21 at his home in Amsterdam, N.Y. Father of Jessica Freeman and her husband, Erick, of Newport, N.H. Brother of Andy Allwood and his wife, Renea, of Locust Grove, Va., and Caroline Fontaine of Rocking­ham. Born in England, the son of Alan and Nancy (Lattimer) Allwood, he was a 1976 graduate of Bellows Falls Union High School and worked in computer aided manufacturing. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, fishing, skiing, and cycling. Memorial information: A memorial gather was held Oct. 27 at the home of Caroline Fontaine. • Robert J. Barry, 77, of West Dover. Died Oct. 20 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington. Husband of Carol (Ryan) Barry for 55 years. Father of Mark Barry and his companion, Jennifer Toothman, of Dumont, N.J., Mary Melnick and her husband, Donald, of Pompton Plains, N.J., and Theresa Hornish and her husband Kevin of Glen Rock, N.J. Brother of the late Charles Alfred Barry. Born in Teaneck, N.J., the son of the late Charles Waters and Irene (Rolfe) Barry, he graduated from St. Cece­lia's High School in Englewood, N.J., and Fordham University. He was employed by Mobil Oil as an interna­tional account manager, retiring after 40 years of service. Upon retirement, he worked at Stratton Mountain in group sales and running their concierge program. While in New Jersey, at St. Pe­ter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, he organized the first lector group, was a Eucharis­tic minister, member of the par­ish council, ran two benefits for the parish that starred Tony Ben­nett, was diocesan chair of Pre-Cana and president of the Holy Name Society. While residing in River Edge, N.J., he was president of the River Edge Swim Club, a board member of the River Edge Library, and fundraising chair for the March of Dimes. Upon moving to Vermont, he became a mem­ber of Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church in Wilmington where he was a member of the parish council. While living in Dover, he was a member of the Se­lectboard for two years and a member of the Board of Listers for five years. He was an avid golfer and cherished times spent with his family, especially his grandchil­dren. Memorial information: A funeral Mass was held Oct. 29 at St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in River Edge, with interment in the family lot in Mt. Car­mel Cemetery in Tenafly, N.J. • Nicolas Edward Emery Boyd, 18, of Whitingham. Died Oct. 19 in Rowe, Mass., from injuries sus­tained in an automobile accident. Son of Shannon Bartlett and Michael Boyd. Stepson of Sandy Boyd of Westover, Md. Brother of Mike Boyd of West Dover, Harry Adams of Searsburg, Heath Adams of Whitingham, John Elting of Whitingham, Willy Elting of Hawley, Mass., Ivan Elting of Whitingham, Cathrine Stoughton of Searsburg, and Nicole Tuttle of Stratton. Stepbrother of Gordon Swanson of Hawaii, Colby Swanson of Maryland, Karla Molina of Hawaii, Madison Swanson of Maryland, and Carley Swanson of Maryland. Born in Bennington, he attended local schools and was a graduate of Twin Valley High School. He worked for Gerry Degray Property Services. He loved animals, his Chevy Blazer, and he loved to cook. He en­joyed hunting and fishing, helping children, and cherished times spent with his family. He would help and do anything for anyone. Memorial information: Funeral services were held Oct. 26 at Covey-Allen & Shea Funeral Home in Wilmington, with burial in the family lot in Sadawga Cemetery in Whitingham. • Ernest K. Chamberlin Sr., 80, of West Dummerston, Died Oct. 19 at his residence in West Dum­merston. Husband of Nancy Chamberlin. Father of Ernest K. Chamberlin, Jr. and his wife, Cathy, of Bellows Falls; Timothy A. Chamberlin and his wife, Sheri, of Dummerston; Jareth T. Chamberlin of Brattleboro; Eileen M. Castine and her husband, Douglas, of Vernon; and Darlene J. Deane of Keene, N.H. Brother of Gerald Macpherson and his wife Donna of South Berwick, Maine, Kenneth P. Chamberlin of Dummerston, and the late Leon Chamberlin and Sandra Robinson. He was born in Dummerston, the son of the late Kenneth Chamberlin and Doris (Walker) Pickering. He was a lifelong Dummer­ston resident and lived in the home that he built. He served his country in the Army dur­ing the Korean War. He was the owner and operator of E.K. Chamberlin & Sons Electri­cians for many years before his retirement. He was very active in the Dummerston community. He coached Little League, was the sponsor of E.K. Chamberlin & Sons softball team in Putney, was the former Police Chief and Constable in Dummerston, and was a member of the Windham County Sheriff's Department and the Dummerston Fire Department. He hosted many end-of-year softball parties, cookouts and Christmas open houses. He was a member of the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST) and enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling, motorcycling, and camping with his grandchildren. Memorial information: A funeral service was held Oct. 26 at Dummerston Congrega­tional Church, with burial in Dummerston Center Cemetery. • Bill Makris, 68, of Westminster. Died Oct. 17 at his home, in the presence of his sister, Dimetra, and close friends. He moved to Westminster from his hometown of Champaign, Ill., to enjoy the Vermont lifestyle and environment which he nurtured and protected. Stories shared at his death reflected a breadth of interests and a depth of commitment to his friends and community: forest management, fish farming, Rotary Club, metal sculpturing, gardening, Kiwanis Club, manufacturing of innovative “green” products, and board member of the River Valley Credit Union, to name a few. Memorial information: In lieu of having a service, he would want you to take a moment to remember him, and enjoy this day to its fullest.

• Helen May Holmes, 59, of Townshend. Died Sept. 6 in Winhall. Wife of Steven St. Peter, whom she married in March 2010. Former wife of Dennis Allard of Springfield, Vt. Mother of Chelsea Allard of Charlotte, N.C., and Tracy Allard of Townshend. Sister of Bill Holmes of Barre, Mass., David Holmes of Whitinsville, Mass, and Edward Holmes of Acton, Mass. Born in Bellows Falls, the daughter of Herbert and the late Lois (Kezer) Holmes, she received her Associate degree from Greenfield Community College. She worked as a registered nurse at Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend for nine years. She was an accomplished horse trainer and carriage driver, and she especially loved teaching children how to ride. She and her husband were very passionate about rescuing animals, especially horses and dogs. It was a cause she cared deeply about. She was an avid photographer and creative writer. She loved writing poems, short stories and essays, and had an amazing way of capturing her thoughts and surroundings with a descriptive, lyrical narrative that was enjoyed by many. She loved nature, her dogs, horses, cats and other animals. Memorial information: Funeral services will be held at the Newfane Congregational Church, at 2 p.m. on Nov. 17. There will be a reception following the service at the NewBrook Fire Department. Interment will be private. Donations to Gerda's Animal Aid, P.O. • Becky Lee (Rabideau) Jacques, 56, of Brattleboro. Died Oct. 15 at Thompson House, after a coura­geous battle with cancer. Wife of Leo Joseph Jacques Jr. for 27 years. Mother of Lisa Ray­mond and Heather Martocci of Vernon. Stepmother of Leo Jo­seph Jacques III and the late Debra Jacques. Sister of Marilyn Gouin, Pamela Barre and the late Diane Avery. The daughter of the late Howard and Shirley (Nutting) Rabideau, she attended St. Michael's School and Brattleboro Union High School. After working for various local businesses, she opened her own housecleaning business. She also enjoyed working for Elysian Hills Tree Farm in Dummerston, making Christmas wreaths and other holiday decora­tions. She loved animals, especially dogs and horses, which led her to volunteer at Gerda's Animal Aid and Rescue in Townshend. Memorial information: Funeral services will be Nov. 23, at 11 a.m., at the Advent Christian Church, Route 142, Ver­non, with burial to follow at St. Mi­chael's cemetery. • Doris A. Lemnah, 87, of Brattleboro, formerly of West Chesterfield, N.H.. Died Oct. 18 at Thompson House. Wife of the late Warren Lemnah, who predeceased her in 1993. Mother of Bruce Lemnah and his wife, Deborah, of West Chesterfield; Richard Lemnah and his wife, Darleen, of Westmoreland; Ronald Lemnah of Keene, N.H.; Margaret Lemnah of Brattleboro; and Sandra Edwards and her husband, David, of Norfolk, Va. Daughter of the late Donald and Clara (Ferkey) King. Memorial information: In accordance with her final wishes, services will be private. Donations to the Thompson House Activities Fund, 80 Maple St., Brattleboro, VT 05301. Arrangements were under the direction of the Atamaniuk Funeral Home.

• Frank W. Smith, 97, of East Dover. Died Oct. 14 at his home. Husband of the late Marie (Gilles) Smith for 56 years. Father of Richard Smith and his wife, Marylou, of East Dover and Ronald L. Smith of Friendship, Maine. Born in New Haven, Conn., he served in the Army's 10th Mountain Division in Italy during World War II. In his earlier years while living in Connecticut, he worked at Pratt & Whitney and Sikorsky. His friendship with Walter Schoenknecht, the founder of Mount Snow, led him to relocate to West Dover where he and his wife established the first ski lodge in West Dover. After selling the lodge, they built the Alp-Hof Lodge at the base of Carinthia, which he operated until retiring at age 52. He was a founding member of the West Dover Fire Department. Throughout the years, he had at­tended the West Dover Congregational Church. He loved the out­doors and spent as much time as he could outside canoe­ing, hiking, biking, gardening, or just sitting in his yard. He enjoyed a lifelong passion for skiing and did so up until age 92. His proud­est possessions were his 10th Mountain Division cap and his commemorative 10th Mountain Division skis. Memorial information: Graveside funeral services were held Oct. 26 at Mountain View Cem­etery in West Dover. • Margaret “Peg” Whitaker, 57, of Saco, Maine. Died Oct. 20 at her home after a long battle with multiple sclero­sis. Wife of David Whitaker. Mother of Chief Petty Officer Erik Whitaker, currently on active duty in the Navy. Sister of Mary McCarthy and Kathleen Rodowitz. Born in Bellows Falls, she graduated from Brattleboro Union High School and The Elms College in Chicopee, Mass. She worked for attorney Ralph Austin of the Law Of­fice of Wood­man, Edmunds, Danlyk, and Austin for well over two deca­des in spite of her failing health. Her husband and son were the shining stars of her life and she always selflessly put family and friends before herself. She will be remem­bered for her great love of all ani­mals and how they loved her, es­pecially her Morgan horse “Buddy.” Uncharacteristic of her calm, quiet demeanor, she was an avid NASCAR and hockey fan. Memorial information: A funeral Mass was held Oct. 25 at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church in Brattle­boro, with burial at Locust Ridge Cemetery in Brattleboro.
