Retreat found in compliance with federal standards

Hospital awaits final determination whether federal funding will continue

BRATTLEBORO — Federal regulators finished a three-day survey of the Brattleboro Retreat on Nov. 6.

The surveyors from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services told Retreat officials they had no findings of noncompliance with federal conditions of participation, according to a press release from the psychiatric hospital.

A final determination letter from CMS indicating whether the Retreat will continue to receive federal funding is pending.

About 30 percent of the Retreat's patients receive federal subsidies for care.

The Retreat, which is the largest private psychiatric hospital in Vermont, serves 14 to 24 patients who are under the care of the commissioner of the Vermont Department of Mental Health. The Retreat is part of the state's decentralized mental health system that was created after Tropical Storm Irene damaged the Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury.

Retreat officials made the following statement: “We wish to acknowledge the extraordinary work of our employees as they continue to be dedicated to improving the lives of the individuals who come to the Retreat for care. Together we have worked with focus and determination to ensure that all patients receive the highest quality care possible. We have engaged in a process of continuous learning and problem solving while simultaneously adjusting our processes and protocols to meet the increasingly complex needs of some of our state's most acutely ill patients.”
