‘A Buddhist View of American Foreign Policy’ is topic of Windham World Affairs Council talk

BRATTLEBORO — Tom Redden, Ph.D., a professor of history and politics at Southern Vermont College, and an ordained Zen Buddhist priest, presents “A Buddhist View of American Foreign Policy” at the Windham World Affairs Council on Friday, Nov. 22, at Marlboro College Graduate Center, 22 Vernon St.

The evening begins with a silent meditation led by Redden - bring your own pillows or blankets - from 5 to 6:45 p.m., followed by a light vegetarian meal prepared by Javed Chaudhri.

There will also be tea and coffee. The lecture begins at 7:15 p.m.

Redden says he will frame the evening's talk by presenting a Buddhist view of politics, which he calls the “politics of compassion.”

Redden poses a simple political question for policy makers - how to minimize suffering? - as part of a reflection of American politics at home and abroad. He draws upon a 36-year daily meditation practice and travels around the world to reflect upon an alternative vision of American politics.
