Open Music Collective presents two student concerts

BRATTLEBORO — The Open Music Collective presents a pair of end-of-the-semester concerts featuring students from this fall's classes.

On Sunday, Dec. 8, at 4 p.m., OMC presents the ensembles' concert, “Standards, Bebop, and Beyond!”

Three bands will share the stage presenting music they worked on since October with different focuses, connecting the schemes and displaying a larger view of lineage in the history of jazz.

The standards band, which meets on Wednesday evenings, will perform a list of favorites featuring Lou Erlanger on guitar, Steve Frankel on bass, Rob Fletcher on chromatic harmonica, Jon Mack on woodwinds, “Seaside” Tommy on alto sax, Denis Basset on tenor sax, and Dan Borden on drums.

The bebop band is focusing on a concise type of style encompassing bebop and hard bop. This ensemble features Scott Sizer on trumpet, Jim Kurty and Michael Barnett on tenor, Porter Fitch on guitar, Sam Lazzaro on drums, and Rob Athens on bass.

The “beyond” band is composed of current and former Hampshire College students, including Gabby Fluke-Mogul on violin, Porter Fitch on guitar, Ryan Mihaly on tenor, Satchel Forrester on alto, Trey Jones on bass, Lucy Hollier on trombone, and Jimmy Caltrider on drums. They will play the music of Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Charlie Parker, and Ornette Coleman.

OMC's jazz vocal repertoire class is showcased on Monday, Dec. 9, at 7:30 p.m. The music consists of a number of well-known songs rarely performed or sung by singers including “Very Early” by Bill Evans, “Lonely Woman” by Horace Silver, “Poinciana” by Nat Simon, and favorites such as “My One and Only Love,” “One Note Samba,” and “Undecided.”

This concert features Scott Sizer (also on trumpet), Anne Thomas, Carolyn Bell, Sharon Leslie, and Gabbi Walton on vocals, as well as Kate Parsons on piano, Jamie MacDonald on bass, and a drummer to be named.
