BMAC to exhibit award-winning work by Vermont teens

Scholastic Art & Writing Award winners on display Feb. 22 to March 8; awards ceremony on March 8

BRATTLEBORO — Brattleboro Museum & Art Center (BMAC) is gearing up to host an exhibit of work by the 2014 Vermont winners of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

Award-winning submissions will be displayed in the museum's Wolf Kahn & Emily Mason Gallery during regular museum hours from Feb. 22 to March 8.

The exhibit features winning artworks in many media, and from across Vermont, including photography, printmaking, drawing, ceramics and glass, various digital arts, painting, and sculpture.

BMAC will also host the official awards ceremony for state winners at the exhibit's closing on March 8. Doors open at 10:30 a.m., and the ceremony is at noon.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have honored the accomplishments of teens in arts and literature each year since 1923. Students in grades 7-12 submit original artistic and written works for the opportunity to gain national recognition and scholarships.

Student art and writing is judged on originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal vision or voice.

Distinguished regional judges select the outstanding (Gold Key), high honors (Silver Key), and honorable mention award winners. All Gold Key works advance to national adjudication by a panel of jurors in New York City. National medal awards will be announced March 17 on the website of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers.

As the Vermont affiliate for this prestigious program, BMAC takes pride in showcasing the work of aspiring young artists from around the state. After receiving 455 artworks from 129 students for consideration this year, the judges selected 10 Gold Key, 22 Silver Key, and 41 honorable mention winners.

Students and teachers from as far north as Burlington and Newport are expected to attend the ceremony, which will feature an address by Eric Aho, a Vermont painter and one of this year's regional judges of the art awards.
