• In Brattleboro (Memorial Hospital), Feb. 26, 2014, twin sons, Grayson Xavier Anderson and Braxxon Lawrence Anderson, to Nadina Anderson of Brattleboro and Kevin Masci of Old Saybrook, Conn.; grandsons to Doreen Christian of Liverpool, England, and the late Clarence Anderson, and William Masci, Adele Masci and the late Angela Masci, all of Old Saybrook.

• Emily Cuerdon of Putney, a stage and production management major at Emerson College in Boston, has been named to the Dean's List for the Fall 2013 semester.

School news

• Greta Larson, a junior from Williamsville, has been named the Windham Regional Career Center's March 2014 student of the month. She is currently enrolled in the Film Making and Digital Editing program at the Career Center and additionally serves as a student ambassador for the WRCC. She was nominated for this award by Michel Moyse, her filmmaking instructor. Larson is broadly interested in the field of communications, which she plans to study in college. She had an internship last year at radio station WTSA, where she was given regular air time and learned to edit audio files. She said she loves her film course this year at the Career Center, finding that it is providing her “a lot of creative room and hands-on experiences.” The Career Center's Film Making and Digital Editing course teaches the fundamentals of filmmaking and introduces students to screenwriting, directing, working with actors, cinematography, lighting, picture and sound editing, and the processes of digitizing and manipulating video. The course is taught at the Center for Digital Arts, located at Cotton Mill Hill in Brattleboro.

• Veronica Stevens, a sixth-grader at NewBrook Elementary School in Newfane, and Vince Ferizzi, a seventh-grader from Leland & Gray Union Middle High School in Townshend, were two of the 41 competitors in the annual Vermont Spelling Bee, held on March 19 in Colchester.

• Alexandra Adams of Newfane, a student at Leland & Gray Union High School, was recently selected to be a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. The society recognizes top students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, scholarship, and community involvement.

• Joyce (Collins) Brooks, 73, formerly of Brattleboro. Died March 21 at her home in Florida. Wife of Jackson Brooks for 53 years. Mother of Lisa, Tod, and Amy Brooks. Sister of Barbara Fletcher and her husband, Edwin, of Chesterfield, N.H., and Debra Greenleaf and her husband, David, of Brattleboro. Born in Brattleboro, the daughter of Christine and Albert Collins, she attended Brattleboro area schools and graduated from Brattleboro Union High School, Class of 1958. Memorial information: No arrangements provided.

• Sarah Kelly Carnahan, 53, of Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. Died March 25. Wife of Alfredo S. Quintero. Mother of Anna Mary, Elizabeth Nadia, and Natalie Margaret Quintero. Brother of Paul A. Carnahan and his wife, Eve; and Susan C. Vodrey and her husband, William. Born in Washington, D.C., the daughter of John H. and Mary F. Carnahan, she graduated from Brattleboro Union High School, Class of 1978; Harvard College, Class of 1982; and Bank Street College Graduate School of Education in 1987. She then received an M.A. in Museum Education. After graduation, she went on to work at MassPIRG, Old Sturbridge Village, and Scarsdale, N.Y., schools. She was a teacher in the Irvington, N.Y., School System since 1992 for grades 2-4. She was an active parishioner at Church of St. Barnabas in Irvington. • Alexander Daniel Firth, 27, of Brattleboro, formerly of New Jersey. Died March 22. Son of Robyn and Jeff Firth of New Gretna, N.J, he was passionate about many things. He was a creative artist and an amazing cook. He enjoyed skateboarding, bicycling, and hiking in Vermont and New Hampshire's mountains. He had an eclectic taste in music, embracing many genres, and especially loved the music of Bob Dylan. He was a dedicated employee and had been employed at Three Stones Restaurant in Brattleboro. He was a devoted and loving son, friend, nephew and cousin who loved and was loved by countless people. He brought joy and laughter to all he encountered in his life. Memorial information: A memorial gathering was held April 2 in New Jersey. A brief service to celebrate his life, followed by an art show and pot luck, will be held on Satruday, April 5, at 1 p.m., at The Stone Church in Brattleboro. • Gordon W. Hescock Jr., 68, formerly of Brattleboro. Died March 20 at Applewood Nursing Home in Winchester, N.H. Husband of Dorothy L. Hescock for 37 years. Father of Johnathan P. Hescock, and his wife Jody, and Jessica L. Hescock and her fiance Richard Verile Jr. Brother of Donald Hescock of Hinsdale, N.H., Bruce Hescock of Brattleboro, Maxine Vigneau of Hinsdale, N.H., Gayle Janovsky of Warwick, R.I., and the late Patricia Barnes. Born in Brattleboro, the eldest son of the late Gordon W. Hescock Sr. and Shirley Hescock. He graduated from Brattleboro Union High School class of 1963. He was drafted into the Navy and served his country proudly in the Vietnam War from 1966-1969. He had a love for life and enjoyed boating, fishing, camping, 4-wheeling, snowmobiling, and partying with his friends and family. He will be missed by many and loved by all who knew him. Memorial information: A funeral service will be held on April 5 at noon at Immanual Episcopal Church, 20 Church St., Bellows Falls.

• Judith Archer Howarth, 73, of Zepherhills, Fla., formerly of Chester. Died March 26. Mother of Terry Peeters and her husband, Mark, of Matthews, N.C.; JoLynne Murphy and her husband, Richard, of Londonderry, N.H.; Stacia Anderson of Chester; Brad Howarth of Bellows Falls; and Randy Howarth of Zepherhills. Sister of Peter Archer and his wife, Joyce, of Middlesex, N.Y. She began her career with the Vermont State Police in 1974, retiring in 2004 after working at the Rockingham, Brattleboro, and Derby barracks. In May 2013, she moved to Florida to continue enjoying her retirement. Among her passions were her flower gardens and traveling with her cousin, Mille Whitten. Memorial information: Services will be at a later date in Vermont.

• Florence Baker Karpin, 89, of Grafton. Died March 24 at her home, following a courageous cancer battle. Wife of Jay Karpin for 67 years. Mother of Janis Broom and Jennifer Karpin (Vincent Cioffi), both of Brattleboro, and Gary Karpin of Gilbert, Ariz. Sister of the late Edna Hart and William and Harry Baker. Born in Lynbrook, N.Y., daughter of the late Edna Searing and Harry Baker, she received her education in New York and New Jersey, graduating from Bound Brook High School in Bound Brook, N.J. in 1942. After high school, she worked at Bakelite Plastics as the editor of their weekly newspaper, and at Grumman Aircraft as a statistician. She married in 1947, and the Karpins made their home on Long Island before moving to Vermont in 1958, where she restored her beloved “Sevenhearth Farm.” Although not formally trained, she was a consummate artist, excelling in writing, visual arts, music, and dance. She authored children's books and poetry, most recently an anthology: “Another Time, Another Place: New and Collected Poems.” She served as president of the Southern Vermont branch of the National League of American Pen Women. Her award winning paintings have hung in the Vermont Statehouse, universities, and art galleries. She was a gifted pianist and tap dancer. She loved design, from house plans to fashion. She also enjoyed sewing, stenciling, and making dollhouses. As accomplished as she was in the world, she poured her heart into homemaking, decorating, and cooking. Memorial information: Her family will scatter her ashes in Grafton. A celebration of her life will be held in Grafton on her birthday, July 20. Donations to TARPS Animal Shelter, P.O. • Mary Agnes Long, 83, of Bellows Falls. Died March 25 in Springfield, Vt. Daughter of the late Edward P. Long Sr. and Julia Agnes Barrett Long. Sister of the late Edward P. Long Jr. and Richard Barrett Long. Sister-in-law of Kay M. Long. Aunt of Kathleen Tobin, Patricia Dodge, Janet West, Richard M. Long, David E. Long, Suzanne Niles, Diane Critchfield, Colleen Long Gottlieb, Margaret Plekan, Sean Long, John Long, and Tracey Gaier. Born in Bellows Falls, she attended St. Charles Parochial School and then Bellows Falls High School, graduating with the Class of 1948. She studied at the Mary Hitchcock School of Nursing from 1948 to 1951 and also earned a B.A. in history from the University of New Hampshire in 1958. Shortly thereafter, she began working as a nurse anesthetist at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston, where she remained for 35 years until her retirement in 1992. She spent the rest of her life at the Long homestead in Bellows Falls, where she enjoyed her family, friends, and Irish heritage. She was a bit of an Irish rover. During her life, she traveled the seven seas and visited every continent. She loved her family, all things Irish, and the Boston Red Sox. She was the family historian for the Long, Barrett, Cremmins, Cronin, O'Brien, Murphy, and Donovan clans. She felt a strong connection to her ancestor Mary Donovan, who emigrated from Ireland to Bellows Falls in the mid-1800s. She was a dedicated member of the Post 37 American Legion Auxiliary. Memorial information: A funeral Mass was held March 31 at St. Charles Roman Catholic Church. Donations to the Post 37 American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship Fund, in care of Kay Long, P.O. Box 304, Bellows Falls, VT 05101. Arrangements were handled by Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls.

• Doris Eaton Trelewicz, 96, of Brattleboro. Died March 20 at her home. Wife of the late Kent O. MacLean and the late Edward Trelewicz. Mother of Geraldine (Tommy) Hines, Janice D'Alia, Judith (Gordon) Wisell, Jean (Ben Abel) MacLean, and Patricia (Casey) Bozetarnik. Sister of Stanley Eaton, Marion Fornier, and the late Clifford Eaton, Ruth Mason, Alice Heslin, and Helen Eaton. Born in Reading, Mass., the daughter of the late Albert and Eva (Smith) Eaton, she grew up in Hudson, N.H, and graduated from Nashua High School in 1938. During her school years, she worked at Bensons Animal Farm in Hudson. In 1939, she married Mr. MacLean, who died in 1964. Together, they raised five daughters. She retired from the Book Press in 1982 and later married Mr. Trelewicz. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Florida. During her retirement, she spent many years volunteering for the Senior Companion program in Brattleboro and Florida. Upon Mr Trelewicz's death, she returned to Brattleboro to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Gordon Wisell. She loved spending time at her daughter's store, Avenue Grocery. Memorial information: A funeral service was held on March 29 at First United Methodist Church (where she was a member for 63 years) in Brattleboro.
