Shaftsbury firm to demolish buyout property

LONDONDERRY — The Selectboard has awarded a $14,650 bid to Shaftsbury-based TAM, Inc. for demolition of 2550 Route 11, one of the town's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program buyout properties.

According to minutes of the March 3 Selectboard meeting, TAM, Inc. came in lower than competing bids from David Chaves Excavating and Gurney Bros., and is experienced with buyout demolitions, having conducted some in Readsboro and Wilmington.

Also March 3, the Selectboard:

• Spent 16 minutes in executive session “to meet with Keith [Barton] about Transfer Station issues.”

• Tabled applications, pending receipt of insurance certificates, for overweight permits from Crandall Logging, Williams Construction, and David Chaves Excavating.

• Learned there is a general road salt shortage that could mean the town will need to conserve its supply through the end of the snow season.

According to Road Foreman Duane Hart, annual salt usage here, dating back to the winter of 2001-2002, has ranged from 705 to 1,226 tons. This year to date, Londonderry has used 965 tons.

The town's supply of sand is good, Hart added.

• Unanimously passed a motion to purchase two portable radios for use by the road crew and road commissioner - an approximate cost of $1,100.

• Agreed to schedule a public information meeting this spring on the Lowell Lake Road culvert project. There was discussion of improvements to Mountain Lake Road to accommodate traffic during the project, though no action was taken, minutes show.
