Village Dance Series celebrates May in Guilford Center

GUILFORD — An evening of community contra and square dances is set for Broad Brook Grange in Guilford Center on Saturday, May 10, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Calling the dance is Andy Davis of Brattleboro, joined by the band Continuum, an extraordinary family band from Amherst, Mass. The band includes Emma Snope on fiddle, Linda Henry on piano, and Bob Snope on concertina, banjo, and euphonium.

A maypole dance is included in the program to welcome spring. A traditional folktale and refreshments are planned as well. A potluck supper is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Davis has been calling dances and performing traditional dance music for several decades. He sings with Nowell Sing We Clear and teaches music at Oak Grove and Green Street schools in Brattleboro, and the Dover Elementary School.

The Village Dance Series, now in its 22nd season, provides an opportunity for families and friends to come together to enjoy one of New England's revered traditional pastimes.

Prior dance experience is not necessary, as all the dances are taught. Although the dances are geared for school-aged children, dancers of all ages and abilities are welcome. The program includes traditional New England contra dances, square dances, circle mixers, and couple dances.
