Lydia Taft Pratt Library celebrates its 100th anniversary

DUMMERSTON — Dummerston's Lydia Taft Pratt Library, one of the oldest libraries in Vermont, celebrates its 100th anniversary on Saturday, May 17.

The festivities begin at 10 a.m. with a book sale in the Dummerston Community Center in West Dummerston, and a silent auction at the library, 150 West St.

At 11 a parade of vintage cars, a fire truck, and the Dummerston Elementary School Marching Band makes its way up West Street to the Community Center and the library, where speakers from the Dummerston Historical Society and Selectboard will share remarks.

The celebration continues with the library's popular annual geranium sale. Geraniums are supplied by Walker Farms.

The auction is backed by donations of gift certificates to The Marina, Paws to Claws, and other area merchants and grocery stores; a basket of jams from Sidehill Farm; a garden set from The Vermont Country Store; and a purse designed and created by Ines Zeller Bass.

A highlight of the day is an appearance by Sandglass Theater, whose Jana Zeller and Shoshana Bass will present the family puppet play “Punschi” featuring the classic puppets Kasper and Fritzi's Flea Circus.

“Punschi,” created and performed by Ines Zeller Bass, has delighted children and their families for 35 years, and is now performed by her daughters. The show starts at 1 p.m. under the tent on the grounds of the Community Center. Tickets are $8. Call 802-257-4673 for reservations.

The festivities, sponsored by the Friends of Lydia, include games for children on the Community Center field and refreshments for sale. All proceeds benefit Lydia Taft Pratt Library programs.
