RFPL, WNESU host free math and science early literacy night

BELLOWS FALLS — Rockingham Free Public Library and the WNESU Early Education Center are teaming up to present “Little Lit: Math and Science,” a fun evening with books, toys, and early math and science literacy on Saturday, May 31, at 6 p.m. in the WNESU building at Cherry Hill.

Families with children aged birth through 5 are welcome to take part in this free program. Each family will receive free books, toys, and lots of activities to help their children develop early math and science literacy skills.

Free dinner and childcare will also be available during the program; families that need childcare should call in advance.

Early literacy, which is defined as how much a child knows about communication, language, reading, and writing before he or she can actually read and write, is significant in a child's development. The more early literacy experiences children have, the easier it is for them to connect what they read to what they know. This leads to greater reading comprehension.

The same is also true for math and science literacy - more experiences help children learn.

Parents who might feel that their math and science skills are weak don't need to worry.

Youth Services Librarian Sam Maskell says that “children are natural explorers of their environment. They're interested in the natural world and how things work; however, many adults are uncomfortable with math and science. We want to show them math and science can be fun and offer tips on practical and inexpensive activities they can do at home.”
