Tax payment dates set

BRATTLEBORO- Real estate and personal property taxes assessed upon the Grand List of 2014 are now due and payable to the town treasurer at the treasurer's office in four equal installments: first installment due Aug. 15; second installment, Nov. 17; third installment, Feb. 17, 2015, and the fourth installment, May 15, 2015.

Real estate and personal property tax will be charged interest at 1 percent per month on any overdue payment, in addition to any other charge provided by law. Also, any real estate and personal property tax remaining unpaid by 5 p.m., May 15, 2015, will be charged an 8-percent penalty, in addition to any other charges provided by law.

In the event of a default in the payment of any one installment, the entire amount then due becomes payable immediately, and a tax lien may be filed with the Town Clerk against any personal property whose taxes are unpaid, in whole or in part.

Early voting for primaries begins

BRATTLEBORO - Early and absentee voting for the Aug. 26 Primary Election in Vermont has now begun.

As of July 11, any registered voter may request a ballot from their town clerk, whether in person, by phone or by mail.

All early and absentee ballot requests must be submitted by 5 p.m. or close of the town clerk's office on Monday, Aug. 25, the day before Election Day.

To vote in the Primary Election, the deadline for voter registration is 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20.

Community Project presents food, fun, and fashion

WEST TOWNSHEND - On Friday, July 18, at 5 p.m., some of the fashion highlights from the West River Community Project (WRCP) Thrift Shop will be modeled during the farmers' market/pizza/ music event at the West Townshend Country Store, at the intersection of Route 30 and Windham Hill Road.

The WRCP is a nonprofit organization supporting community activities in the West River Valley. Every Friday, people gather at the store to purchase local produce and goods, to enjoy pizza baked in the wood-fired pizza oven, to listen to local musicians, and to shop for household goods and clothes.

The thrift shop is located on the second floor. All proceeds from thrift shop sales benefit WRCP.

Colonial-era meeting houses to be discussed

GUILFORD - On Sunday, July 20, the Vermont Humanities Council, with the Guilford Historical Society as host, will present a lecture/slide program on early New England Meeting Houses.

The presenter will be Paul Wainwright, author and photographer from Atkinson, N.H. Wainwright will illustrate these stately, early New England buildings that were originally built for town usages and then frequently became churches.

Wainwright has lectured widely on the subject, and his photographs of them are widely displayed throughout area galleries and museums.

The program will take place at 2 p.m. at the Historical Society's 1837 Guilford Center Meeting House at 3896 Guilford Center Rd., 5 miles west of the Guilford Country Store.

Make a remembrance flag with Hospice

BRATTLEBORO - Community members are invited to come to Brattleboro Area Hospice, 191 Canal St., on Thursday July 24, from 4 to 6 p.m. to make a remembrance flag in honor of a loved one who has died.

All materials for the free session will be provided. Everyone is welcome. These flags are fun and easy to make, with no special artistic talent needed. All flags will hang at the Hospice Memorial Garden on Guilford Street during the coming year.

Judy Van Wageningen and Connie Baxter will host the free event. Refreshments will be on hand. Drop-ins are welcome, but preregistration to Joyce at 802-257-0775, ext. 105, is appreciated to ensure enough materials.

Community picnic at Dutton Pines

DUMMERSTON - Transition Dummerston's program for July, “Celebrating Summer and Connecting with Community,” will feature a family potluck picnic at Dutton Pines State Park on Route 5, on Friday, July 25, from 5:30 p.m. to dusk.

This family-friendly event, co-sponsored by the Dummerston Conservation Commission, will include a nature walk on the park trails, singing, informal conversation, and discussion of next steps toward developing the Dutton Pines Park project.

Bring your own picnic food to share (locally sourced if possible); a blanket and folding chairs; and insect repellent. Also suggested: musical instruments, song books, and a song, poem, or story to celebrate community and summer. Charcoal grills will be available, as well as a small fire for marshmallows.
