The Devil Makes Three to play benefit for Putney Mountain Association

PUTNEY — On Thursday, July 24, The Devil Makes Three plays a benefit concert for the Putney Mountain Association's acquisition of 144 acres on Holland Hill.

This alt-roots acoustic string band, with deep ties to the hills of Putney, has just come off a tour with Willie Nelson and Alison Krauss, and is playing to packed venues in Europe.

They'll return from the European tour and perform the benefit concert in Putney before they depart to a sold-out performance at the Newport Folk Festival.

Known for tight harmonies and nocturnal howls, The Devil Makes Three has long made crowds go wild.

Pete Bernhard, who writes most of TDM3's music, says he sees a connection between wilderness and the wildness inside of all of us. Pointing to government surveillance and the overuse of medication, Bernhard sees a need to protect “wild behavior and the wildness of nature.”

The 144-acre parcel that the PMA intends to purchase includes forest, marsh, fields and the only year-round stream in Putney Mountain Association lands. High on Holland Hill, the Hannum-O'Connor parcel extends the wildlife corridor along Windmill Ridge and connects existing trails to Putney Mountain and beyond.

Wildlife in the region include bear, bobcat, fisher, moose, and coyote. The hillside is also home to deer and migratory birds.
