Green River Covered Bridge closed to traffic

GUILFORD - The Green River Covered Bridge will be closed to all vehicular traffic through Friday, Sept. 15.

The bridge will reopen for pedestrian traffic on Wednesday, Aug. 27.

The town of Guilford has contracted with Zaluzny Excavating, in partnership with Welch Masonry LLC, to reconstruct the northwest wing wall of the bridge. The project involves excavating the west side section of Stage Road near the approach to the covered bridge.

River Road at its juncture with (west) Stage Road will remain open to through traffic, but expect delays. For updates, visit www.guilfordvt.net.

Historical Society reopens Bradley law office

WESTMINSTER - The William Czar Bradley Law Office was closed in 1858. With much planning and hard work, the building was transferred on April 10, 2014, to the Westminster Historical Society. Now the Society is reopening the law office to friends and visitors on Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. through Aug. 31.

A wonderful reproduction of attorney Bradley's portrait will be on display. Come help the Society bring history back to life, and learn what went on in Westminster so many years ago.

Bluegrass music event to benefit Parks Place

WALPOLE, N.H. - Come tap your toes at the “Bluegrass on the Farm Benefit” for Parks Place Community Resource Center.

Nick and Sedia Bayard perform Saturday, Aug. 2, at 7:30 p.m. at the Howell Studio, 250 Old Keene Rd., Walpole, N.H. Admission is by donation. All proceeds go to Parks Place.

Bring lawn chairs and sit outside to hear the Bayards in a great New England setting. In the event of rain, the Howell Studio provides ample seating for 75. Refreshments will be served. For more information, call Parks Place at 802-463-9927.

Parks Place, in Bellows Falls, is a welcoming and accessible resource center serving 3,500 individuals annually with a wide array of health and human services, from parenting classes to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings to mental health counseling to educational tutoring and homelessness prevention.

Boys & Girls Club presents Duck Derby

BRATTLEBORO - The Boys & Girls Club of Brattleboro and the Brattleboro Recreation and Parks Department present the annual Duck Derby on Wednesday, Aug. 6, at Living Memorial Park.

All events start at 4 p.m. Look for face painting, cardboard boat building and the related race, free swimming, music, a dinner provided by the 99 Restaurant, and the Duck Pluck (just before 6 p.m.).

“Adopt” your ducks at Brattleboro Savings & Loan, River Valley Credit Union, and the Boys & Girls Club on Flat Street, or that afternoon at the park. Ducks are $5 each; five ducks are $20; 50 ducks are $100.

Townshend Lake bridge to close for inspection

TOWNSHEND - The entrance bridge to Townshend Lake, off of Route 30, will be closed for inspection Wednesday, Aug. 6, from 9 a.m. to noon.

During this time residents and visitors to Townshend Lake will be able to access the lake via State Forest Road.

Trees, invasive species are topics at Garden Club meeting

NEWFANE - The Newfane Garden Club will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, Aug. 7, at 2 p.m. at Newfane Congregational Church.

This month, Windham County Forester Bill Guenther will speak about trees and their care in the home landscape, and invasive plant species and insect threats to the hemlock, ash, and other trees in our area. All are welcome.

Items needed for Hospice auction

BRATTLEBORO - Brattleboro Area Hospice sponsors the third annual Cherished Goods Auction on Saturday, Oct. 25, at the VFW.

Past auctions have featured fine antiques and other quality furnishings, thanks to the generosity of many. Hospice particularly needs pieces of good furniture or antiques to be auctioned off for this fundraiser. Also needed: are high-quality jewelry in good condition, paintings, china, glassware, and decorative items.
