A modest gun-control proposal

Jim Smith has an extremely good point: Why would a feloniously inclined person submit to a background check?

What we need are vigilant gun owners who will not allow their guns to ever come into the possession of such a person.

The way to do this - quite in keeping with the NRA's interpretation of the Second Amendment - is to make the first purchaser of a firearm responsible for its use until his or her death. He or she should be able to buy and own as many as desired, but to gift one, sell one, pawn one, lose one, leave one unsecured, or lend one would be to face full responsibility for its misuse by anyone during its lifetime.

Suddenly, 250 million gun owners would be a potent arm of law enforcement, denying criminals access to guns.
