Musicians come together for First Baptist Church heat fund

BRATTLEBORO — A group of local musicians will perform Gimme Shelter, a show to benefit the Brattleboro Overflow Winter Shelter on Sunday, Jan. 18, at 2:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church on Main Street.

The musicians, along with technicians for the show, are donating their time and talent, so all proceeds will go directly to heating the First Baptist Church, which houses the shelter.

For a donation of $10 or more, concert attendees will be entertained in the Baptist Church, which concert organizers describe as an acoustically rich, circular space that brings the audience close to the performers.

The lineup:

• Scott Ainslie is a master of the blues, with vocals and guitar that are authentic, passionate, and award winning. His newest album, released last September, is The Last Shot Got Him.

• Singer-songwriter Lisa McCormick is known for her smart lyrics, sultry vocals, and sophisticated acoustic guitar arrangements. Her latest album, Love Changes Everything, came out this past November.

• Samirah Evans, formerly of jazz-abundant New Orleans and one of its most popular singers, has a 25-year career as a performer and recording artist. Her latest album, Hot Club, is her first live release. Eugene Uman, director of the Vermont Jazz Center, will accompany her on piano.

• Soprano singer-songwriter Hannah Hoffman has been likened to an early Joni Mitchell and also plays guitar and piano. She is finishing the recording of her first album.

• The a cappella group House Blend is comprised of 20 veteran singers devoted to songs from around the world and throughout history. The group has released two CDs.

• Singcrony is a female a cappella quartet fond of swing jazz, doo-wop, and classic pop from the '20s through the '50s. The group organized the Gimme Shelter show.
