Vernon Historians have new Facebook page

VERNON — VERNON - The Vernon Historians have sailed into the 21st century with a new Facebook page complete with timeline, photos, and recent posts.

The group's “about” statement describes the group's mission: “[to] provide the community with access to the town's past, from photographs and biographical records to how to make homemade ice cream.”

The Historians report that everything from meeting and event notices to photographs and oral histories will be made available on this site.

The most recent post includes pictures of the former Pine Top ski resort. The site has received positive feedback from viewers, including “This is wonderful, a big thank you to [whoever] took the time and ability to get this on Facebook” and “Great move!”

New e-newsletter starts publishing

VERNON -The first issue of the Vernon Community News hasn't hit the press.

That's because there's no press to hit for the new community newsletter, whose first issue was distributed Jan. 31 as a PDF.

“We want to thank everyone who encouraged and helped us along the way,” wrote co-editors Bronna Zlochiver and Heather Frost in the first issue, noting that “the response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive.”

Zlochiver spoke of the need for a source of community news and its potentially positive impact at a recent Selectboard meeting. She told the board that contributors will cover a variety of subjects, including “birding, gardening, and farming."

The newsletter will also function as a forum for public service announcements, such as the start of hunting season and tax deadlines.

Zlochiver reported that a local resident had already proposed an article on the impact Vermont Yankee's closing had had on his life, an idea she validated with enthusiasm.

The paper will be distributed electronically each month free to subscribers. Anybody is welcome to contribute. The editors reserve the right to reject offensive material and edit any articles that contain grammatical errors or are disproportionately long.

Town candidates' forum

VERNON- Voters are invited to meet the candidates for Selectboard, School Board, and other elected offices, hear their perspectives on local issues, and share concerns at an open forum for candidates on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Vernon Elementary School.

“This is our opportunity to have a dialog with the people who want to help the town move forward in our post-Vermont Yankee future,” according to the Vernon Voters Alliance, which is organizing the program.

The discussion will be moderated, and candidates will have the opportunity to make opening statements followed by audience questions and comments.
