Celebrate Chinese New Year at the Putney Library

PUTNEY — Putney Public Library and Alchemy Arts, a new community art space, are teaming up to offer a series of youth programs for Chinese New Year.

Come bring in Year of The Sheep with creative, fun, and free events that will take place or start at Putney Public Library, at 55 Main St.

Children ages 8 and younger are welcome with the company of an adult. Older children can come unaccompanied.

• Wednesday, Feb. 25, 3:30 p.m.: “How the Rooster Lost its Antlers,” story and origami paper art. After school, come find your place with the animals of the Chinese zodiac and celebrate the coming of the Chinese New Year by making an origami animal representing the year you were born.

• Thursday, Feb. 26, 3:30 p.m.: Dragon Dance I. Co-create a fire-breathing Chinese dragon. After school, learn more about the tradition of the Chinese dragon and build a larger-than-life moving dragon in preparation for a sidewalk parade through Putney.

• Saturday, Feb. 28, 11 a.m.: Dragon Dance II. Strut your stuff as you become the dragon. Shake and shimmer your dragon way in a Putney sidewalk parade ending at Alchemy Arts for tea and a reception.

The dragon the group builds will remain on display at the library for the month of March.
