Marlboro College Graduate Center offers series on nonprofit board development

BRATTLEBORO — The Marlboro Board Leadership Institute has begun a workshop series for members of nonprofit boards.

On Thursday, March 12, at 5:30 p.m., at the Marlboro College Graduate Center on Vernon Street, Ellen Koenig, a senior consultant with Full Circle Consulting, will lead a session on nonprofit board roles and responsibilities.

Are you thinking about joining a board but wonder what being a board member involves? After a quick history of why we have nonprofits in the United States, participants will identify the responsibilities of board members, consider the characteristics that make an exceptional board, and learn the three types of questions board members should be asking.

This workshop also provided opportunities to learn and practice techniques for discussing organizational issues in 'mini board' discussions. The cost of this three-hour workshop is $60.

On Thursday, March 19, at 6:30 p.m., at the Marlboro College Graduate Center, Julie McNeal, director of finance and operations for the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants, leads a session on fiscal responsibility and fraud protection.

What is the board's fiscal responsibility? How well do you need to understand finances to be on a board? This workshop will help answer these questions, and help participants know what questions to ask to get the answers you need.

The workshop will also explore fraud, and some ideas for protecting your organization from fraud. The cost of this two-hour workshop is $40.
