Dinner and “Moonstruck” at Popolo

Cher, Nicolas Cage star in Oscar-winning film on March 25, with fixed price Italian menu

BELLOWS FALLS — While it's hard to imagine Cher in the role of widowed accountant Loretta Castorini, or tolerate Loretta's loveless betrothal to Johnny Cammereri, this all seems unremarkable compared to her furious romance with Johnny's brother, the hot-headed, one-handed baker, Ronny Cammereri, played by Nicolas Cage.

From time to time, the restaurant Popolo pairs movies with prix fixe dinners and this one hits the big screen in the restaurant on Wednesday, March 25, at 7 p.m.

In “Moonstruck,” the chaotic and adulterous love-lives of mom and dad Castorini add color to Ronny and Johnny's contentious history and Ronny's resultant single-handed victory. Add in the two brothers' occasionally dying Sicilian mother, and we're all taught a lesson or three about love and desire.

Popolo might have planned better and offered the 1983 Oscar-winning film during a full moon in Bellows Falls, but the lunacy will ensue under the spring's first waxing crescent, nonetheless.

Now heralded as one of the best and most classic of the romantic comedies, “Moonstruck” has a bittersweet flavor that makes one feel for every one of these outsized characters and the predicaments in which they find themselves.
