Memorial Day service marks 150th anniversary Civil War's end

BRATTLEBORO — This year, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the end of the American Civil War, American Legion Post 5 will host lectures on the Civil War at various sites in downtown Brattleboro on Sunday, May 24, and a banquet that Sunday evening at 6 p.m. at the American Legion Home located at 32 Linden St. Tickets for the banquet are $15.

Vermont historian Howard Coffin, author of Full Duty: Vermonters in the Civil War and other works, will give a lecture and will be the guest speaker at the banquet.

Other authorities, including distinguished Vermont historian Frank Bryan, Professor Emeritus at the University of Vermont; and Andre Fleche, Professor at Castleton State College, will give lectures on Civil War topics during the afternoon.

This commemorative event is in addition to the customary Memorial Day services on May 25 at the town cemeteries and monuments, the ceremony in the Common at 11 a.m., and the lunch at the Legion Hall at noon.

A schedule of the lecture topics, presenters, and venues will be published shortly. Reservations for the banquet are suggested.
