• In Brattleboro (Memorial Hospital), March 16, 2015, a daughter, Snoh Leigh Gaboriault, to Ashley Buffum and Justin Gaboriault of Bellows Falls; granddaughter to Tammy Page, Jerald Buffum, Tammy Buffum, Richard Gaboriault, Lori Royea, Larry Royer, Lucie Gaboriault.

• In Lebanon, N.H., (Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center), March 10, 2015, a daughter, Lacey Leigh Kissell to Christina Aguiar and Daniel Kissell Jr. of Bellows Falls; granddaughter to Alana and Lenny Derby of Westminster, and Deborah and Daniel Kissell Sr. of Westminster.

College news

• Hannah Lynde, a sophomore from Brattleboro, was named to the Dean's List for the fall semester of the 2014-15 academic year at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va.

• Su Min Park of Saxtons River was named to the Dean's List in the fall 2014 semester at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y.

• Tyler Terrell of Westminster participated in the second annual 48-hour Playwriting Competition at Champlain College. Students met at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 20 to receive a prompt and spent the next day writing a 10-minute play. Writers met their actors on Sunday morning to rehearse, and the plays were performed at the Playwriting Competition Showcase on Sunday night.

Obituaries

• Kenneth Joseph Bellville, 90, of Brattleboro. Died March 18 at Bradley House. Wife of Alberta (Magoon) Bellville for 70 years. Father of Peter of Galt, Calif, Jan of Brattleboro, Lynn McCarty of Lodi, Calif., Jeffery of Brattleboro, and the late Gail Lamson. Brother of Lorraine Goulas, and Fred, Lawrence, Raymond, Armand, and Floyd Bellville. Also survived by 14 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. Born in St. Albans, the family moved to Brattleboro in 1937, where he attended high school. He joined the Navy (because he said their food was best) to serve with the Seventh Fleet in the Pacific during World War II. After he was discharged in February 1946, he bought a house on Hudson Street where the Holstein Friesian association buildings now stand. Later, the couple moved to Green Street where they spent the rest of their lives until age limitations necessitated a change. He was a dependable worker, and very capable with his hands and tools. Over the years, he owned several houses which he renovated and rented out. He worked at Holden & Martin Lumber Company, Thomas Dairy, American Optical, Suburban Propane, and he drove school buses. He also owned and operated several local businesses;, including Page's Ice Cream, Johnny's Drive-In, and Tyler's Store in Hinsdale, N.H. He and his wife took in many foster children over the years. For five years, he volunteered at the Senior Center, delivering Meals on Wheels. He enjoyed baseball, football, hunting and woodworking. Generally, he was a kind, happy, and optimistic person who attracted friends. He was devoted to his family and loved animals such as dogs, birds, and squirrels. With his wife, he was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. His last few years were spent comfortably at Bradley House. His life in all respects was common, except to those who knew and loved him. He was a simple man who achieved a degree of greatness in a simple life. Memorial information: A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, April 4, at 11 a.m., at Atamaniuk Funeral Home, 40 Terrace Street, Brattleboro. • Celia M. (Benjamin) Crapo, 89, formerly of Brattleboro. Died March 18 at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Conn. Wife of the late Glynn A. Crapo for 66 years. Mother of Eric P. Crapo, of Ludlow, Mass.; Charlotte A. Plummer, and her husband, David, of Windsor Locks, Conn.; and the late Kevin Crapo. Sister of David, Clayton, and Gerald Benjamin, Nancy Campbell, Marie Wright, and the late Hubert, Eugene, Lawrence, Andrew, and Everett Benjamin, Genevieve Dalrymple, and Ethel Martel. Born in Champlain, N.Y., the daughter of the late Halsey and Eva (Jarvis) Benjamin, she lived in several rural towns in and around Champlain, N.Y. prior to moving to Brattleboro at the age of 13. She met her husband-to-be at a Valentine's dance and were married in 1947, and settled in Windsor Locks in 1955. She was employed with American Optical in Brattleboro and retired from Redington Counters after 20 years. The Crapos bowled in couples leagues for several years and, for seven years, they spent the winter months in Florida. They were world travelers and went on many wonderful vacations. She was a faithful parishioner of St. Robert Church. She enjoyed gardening and loved to read a good book, but family was the center of her life. Memorial information: A funeral Mass was held March 28 at St. Robert Bellarmine Church in Windsor Locks, with burial in St. Mary Cemetery. Donations to the Alzheimer's Association, Conn. • Richard S. Nelson, 85, of Springfield, Vt. Died March 20. Husband of the late Jeanne A. (Sechrist) Nelson for nearly 57 years. Father of Bryan A. Nelson of Springfield and Debra J. Nelson of Concord, N.H. Brother of Ronald Nelson of Keene, N.H., David Nelson of Springfield, and the late Henry, Harold, Robert, Carl, Vic, Ruth Morell, Margie Reed, and Dorothy Wanzey. Born in Guilford, the son of the late Henry W. and Ethelyn (Amidon) Nelson. he attended schools in the Guilford area and attended Brattleboro High School, leaving school early to work on the family farm. He served in the Army during the Korean War, and later made his home in Springfield for many years. He worked at Fellows Gear Shaper, and later owned and operated Dick's Travel Center and Dick's Shell Station, retiring from the service station in 1996. He wintered in Florida for many years, and moved there full time after his retirement. He returned to Springfield in 2009. While living in Florida, he would return to Vermont every year for deer hunting. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and playing golf in Vermont and Florida for many years. • Lewis R. Newton, 88, of Sebego, Maine, formerly of Dummerston. Died March 20 at the Hospice House of Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice in Auburn, Maine. Husband of the late Alice Nelda (Corbett) Newton for 60 years. Father of Douglas Newton and his wife, Susan, of Sebago; Bruce Newton of Bradenton, Fla.; and Jeffery Newton and his wife, Rebecca, of Chester, Va. Brother of the late Helen Newton Wright. Born in Dummerston, the son of the late Roswell Albert and Lola Belle Johnson Newton, he was a graduate of Brattleboro High School, Class of 1944. Immediately upon graduation, he joined the Army and served in the waning days of World War II. He was a printer and worked for many years at The Book Press in Brattleboro and, later, as the press room supervisor at R. R. Donnelley in Harrisonburg, Va. A member of the Dummerston Congregational Church, he also belonged to the Clan Murray Society and the American Legion. After his retirement, he enjoyed making walking canes and attending Scottish Highland Festivals. The Newtons were active in their church communities both in Vermont and in Leesburg, Fla. and volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels. Memorial information: Services will be held at a later date. • Elfleda “Fleet” Catherine Pike, 88, of Brattleboro. Died March 23 at Thompson House in Brattleboro, where she had been a resident for the past two years. Wife of the late Harry A. Pike Jr. for 54 years. Mother of Mary Rosania and husband, John, of Plantsville, Conn.; Susan Cleveland and husband, Ronald, of Brattleboro; Kevin Pike and his wife, Anne, of Hinsdale, N.H.; Brian Pike of Lebanon, N.H., and the late Douglas Pike and Allen Pike, and Carol W. Jarrett. Sister of the late Howard Baker Jr. Born in Randolph, the daughter of the late Howard and Catherine (Nichols) Baker, she moved to Brattleboro with her family in 1938. She was a graduate of Brattleboro High School, Class of 1947. She retired from New England Telephone, where she worked as a telephone operator for 20 years. Following her retirement, she worked at Hilltop House for several years. She was the family historian and was a member of the Genealogical Society of Vermont, and the Brattleboro and Halifax Historical Societies. A woman of strong faith, she was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She loved genealogy, family history and taking trips throughout New England. Memorial information: Graveside committal services in Morningside Cemetery will be held in the springtime when the cemetery reopens. • Mark W. Reinhardt, 88, of Brattleboro. Died March 24 at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington. Husband of the late Jeane Reinhardt for 57 years. Father of Jeanne Reinhardt Doob and her husband, Peter J., of Brentwood, Calif., and John Reinhardt and his wife, Lynn, of Brookline. Born in Pekin, Ill., the son of the late George A. and Roma Reinhardt, he graduated from Urbana High School and proudly served his country in the Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1986. He attended the University of Illinois, and lived most of his adult life in Champaign-Urbana, Ill., where he was a real estate agent and independent fee appraiser. Before moving to Brattleboro in 2000, he resided in Manchester, Vt. He was a member of the Brattleboro Rotary Club; the Brattleboro Cairo Shriners; the American Legion, and several other organizations. He was a city council member in Urbana, Ill., served on the Champaign County Board of Realtors (earning Realtor of the Year in 1968), and served as village clerk and town lister in Manchester. He was known for his quick wit and humor. His hobbies included golf, auto racing, fine automobiles, reading, and traveling. Memorial information: A memorial service will be held at a later date. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. Donations to the National Parkinson Foundation. The Ker-Westerlund Funeral Home of Brattleboro is assisting the family with arrangements.
