May birthday luncheon

BRATTLEBORO — BRATTLEORO - The Brattleboro Senior Center and the Brattleboro Senior Meals Program will host their May Birthday Luncheon for seniors with birthdays this month on Thursday, May 14, at 11:30 a.m., at the Gibson-Aiken Center, 207 Main St.

The menu will include an appetizer table, punch, baked apricot ham, scalloped potatoes, turnips and greens, cake, and ice cream.

All are invited to attend. Those with birthdays in the month of May are invited to celebrate the occasion by sitting at the birthday table and waiving their donation for the day. They may invite one guest to sit with them; however, that guest is encouraged to make the regular donation.

The suggested donation for seniors (age 60 and older) is $4. Entertainment will be provided.

Fall prevention assessments

BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Senior Center and Brattleboro Memorial Hospital will offer a free fall prevention assessment on Wednesday, May 20, at 12:30 p.m., at the Gibson-Aiken Center, 207 Main St.

Staff from the BMH Rehab Services department will speak briefly about the importance of fall prevention. Good balance is necessary to help one carry out daily activities, stay independent, and help maintain mobility, and staff will also provide balance screenings.

Senior Windham Walkers plan a hike

BRATTLEBORO - The Senior Windham Walkers are ready for another season of hiking and walking adventures.

On Friday, May 22, weather permitting, participants will walk and hike the trails in Fort Dummer State Park. Enjoy scenic views and find peace and quiet in the woods. Meet at the Senior Center, 207 Main St., at 10:30 a.m. and carpool to the park.

This hike is moderately difficult. Please wear sturdy walking shoes, dress appropriately (layers are recommended), and wear bug spray. Bring a non-breakable, easy-to-carry water bottle.

'Medicare Jeopardy' game

BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Senior Center and Vermont SMP (Senior Medicare Patrol) will offer a “Medicare Jeopardy” game on Tuesday, May 26, at 11 a.m., at the Gibson-Aiken Center at 207 Main St.

The game is designed to teach and open a discussion on issues related to Medicare error, fraud, and abuse. Participants receive a short presentation prior to playing the game to help cover important points and topics.

For approximately 45 minutes, participants will play this game similarly to the televised version of Jeopardy, and can win prizes.

Lynn Martin to read poetry

BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Senior Center will host poet Lynn Martin for a reading of her own work on Thursday, May 28, at 10:30 a.m., at the Gibson-Aiken Center, 207 Main St.

Martin's poetry has appeared in Calliope, River City, South Florida Review, and many more journals. Her nonfiction has been published in the Mystery Review, the Reformer, and The Commons. She has three books: Visible Signs of Defiance, Talking to the Day, and Birds of a Feather.

Her current love is collaborations, and Martin has teamed with a dancer, an artist, a photographer, and a songwriter. She has been taking painting classes at the Senior Center, and every one of her paintings thus far has a connection with poetry.
