Transition Dummerston hosts community picnic
DUMMERSTON - For its monthly potluck and program series, Transition Dummerston will hold its second annual Community Picnic at Dutton Pines State Park on Route 5 in East Dummerston, on Friday, May 29, from 5:30 p.m. to dusk.
At 5:30 p.m., a campfire will be built. Visitors can hike the Myron Dutton Memorial Nature Trail to work up an appetite for the potluck-picnic that will begin at 6:30 p.m., with local foods encouraged. From 7:30 to dusk, there will be a campfire, with singing, marshmallow roasting, and a chance to share thoughts and visions about the valuable community resource of this park.
The event is co-sponsored by Transition Dummerston and the Dummerston Conservation Commission. Attendees are encouraged to bring a camp chair or picnic blanket. Center Congregation hosts Latin American dinner
BRATTLEBORO - There will be a Latin American dinner at Centre Congregational Church, 193 Main St., on Friday, May 29, at 6 p.m.
The dinner is a fundraiser for scholarships for children in Centre Church's sister church in El Salvador. Salvadoran and Latin American food will be featured, along with music and art. Attendees can meet past travelers from trips to El Salvador since 1994 and see photos and videos of last year's youth trip.

Asbury Church to hold spring rummage sale
CHESTERFIELD, N.H. - Asbury Church on Route 63 will hold a spring rummage sale on Saturday, May 30, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
There will be items for sale inside the church and, weather permitting, outside in the church parking lot. A wide variety of goods will be available to choose from, including a huge selection of clothing in all sizes, as well as food items made by the cooks of Asbury Church.
Yard, bake sale at Trinity Lutheran
BRATTLEBORO - There will be a yard sale and bake sale at Trinity Lutheran Church, 161 Western Ave., on Saturday, May 30, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The yard sale includes plus-sized women's clothing, books, and household items, while the bake sale will include some Swedish bread items and a variety of baked goods.
The proceeds from the yard sale will benefit Trinity's mission in the community, while the proceeds from the bake sale will benefit the Steven Vakaros family to help with medical and living expenses during his cancer treatment. 'Matter of Balance' class offered in Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE - On Monday, June 1, at 1 p.m., at the Whitingham Municipal Center, Senior Solutions will offer the first session of the class series “A Matter of Balance, Managing Concerns About Falls.”
The class is for people who fear falling.

Facebook class offered at Main Street Arts
SAXTONS RIVER – How to use Facebook is the subject of a workshop being offered by Main Street Arts on June 6 and 13, from 10 to 11 a.m.
Sam Maskell will help participants get connected, learn how to post, write on a wall, import photos and use other tools.
The first day will focus on Facebook for beginners, with day two split up to cover the individual needs of the group, such as more help for beginners or Facebook for businesses, nonprofits and other groups.
Maskell is the children's librarian at the Rockingham Free Public Library and says she has been on computers “forever.” She has taught Facebook to all ages, including a class last year at MSA.

Library to hold book and art fundraiser
SOUTH LONDONDERRY – The South Londonderry Free Library will hold its annual Book Sale on Saturday, June 6, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. New this year, in conjunction with the really big book sale, there will be art available for purchase. A portion of their proceeds will be donated to the library.
Because of the on-going process of preparing for automation and bar-coding of all holdings at the library, many books have been withdrawn from the collection. Many of these older books will be included in the sale. For sale will be cookbooks, biographies, antique and vintage books, art books, children's books, current fiction, paperbacks, and more in all categories.
During the months of June and July, Paul Myers will be showing new artwork from his many travels. He will hold a reception on Wednesday, June 10, between 7 and 9 p.m. All are invited to attend.

Solar workshop offered at Grad Center
BRATTLEBORO - On Monday, June 8, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Marlboro College Graduate Center, 28 Vernon St., Brattleboro Climate Protection and the Brattleboro Energy Committee will present a free informational workshop that will cover the basics of going solar.
The workshop features a presentation by Kirk Shields of Green Mountain Power. Attendees will learn the advantages of solar electric systems, and about the different types of systems that are available, including community solar. Local installers will be on hand to answer questions about solar and its affordability.

Brattleboro Climate Protection and the Brattleboro Energy Committee are working with five local solar companies to sponsor Brattleboro Solar Summer. Their goal is for at least 100 Brattleboro residents to install solar electric systems on their home or business, or buy shares in a community solar project during the campaign period, May 1 to Sept. 30, 2015.

Olsen organizes meeting on suspicious fire
LONDONDERRY - In response to public concerns regarding suspicious fires in and around South Londonderry, state Rep. Oliver Olsen, R-Jamaica, has scheduled a community meeting at the Londonderry Town Hall on Middletown Road in South Londonderry on Monday, June 8, at 7 p.m.
Vermont State Police Capt. J.P. Sinclair, who heads up the Criminal Investigation Unit and is the Chief Criminal Investigator, will address the community at this meeting. He will be joined by Det. Lt. Daniel Trudeau, who is the head of the Troop D detectives, along with detectives from the Fire Investigation Unit.
Topics for this meeting will include an overview of the investigative team that has been assembled, a history of suspicious fires in the area, the current status of the investigation, what the public should and should not do, and recommendations for how the public can protect their property.
Members of the public who have questions or concerns about the ongoing investigation of these suspicious fires are encouraged to attend this meeting.
Grace Cottage golf benefit set for June 13
WILMINGTON - Support a great cause and enjoy an afternoon of golf on Saturday, June 13, at the spectacular Hermitage Golf Club at Haystack Mountain in Wilmington.
Now in its sixth year, Grace Cottage Hospital's Tee It Up for Health golf benefit helps to support Grace Cottage Hospital's Patient Care Fund.
The tournament starts with a buffet lunch at noon and a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Prizes will be awarded, including longest drive, closest to pin, lowest and highest-scoring teams, and many more; the two hole-in-one contests include a 2015 Crosstrek provided by Brattleboro Subaru and a lifetime membership to The Hermitage Club at Haystack Mountain (skiing and golfing).
The player fee is $150, and this includes lunch, greens fees, golf cart, logowear, contests, and an awards dinner served in the clubhouse following the tournament.
The Hermitage Golf Club at Haystack Mountain, designed by acclaimed architect Desmond Muirhead in 1972, is located at 70 Spyglass Drive in Wilmington. Registration closes at 5 p.m. on June 7.
