AAUW awards scholarships to area women

BRATTLEBORO — The Brattleboro branch of American Association of University Women (AAUW) awarded five college scholarships for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Three high school graduates and two mature women, already pursuing higher education, received $1,000 each.

The high school recipients are:

• Haley E. Buffum of Leland & Gray Union High School. She will attend Johnson State College this fall to major in secondary and special education, and hopes to teach in Vermont after graduation. Throughout her high school career, she was a varsity soccer and basketball player. She was a member of the National Honor Society and was active in several community service programs.

• Emily Stockwell of Leland & Gray Union High School. She will attend University of Vermont; her major is undecided. For four years, she has been involved with Civic Leadership Education in Action (CLEA) to raise awareness about world issues. Two years ago, she went to Costa Rica to paint a non-government school and reconstruct their playground.

• Chorsom Wetchanukroh of Brattleboro Union High School. She will attend Clark University in Worcester, Mass., this fall to major in education, Asian studies, and justice. She arrived in the United States from Thailand three years ago, not knowing English, but she has learned it quickly. She helped create the Exploring Culture Club for students who wanted to share cultural experiences.

The Mature Woman Award recipients are:

• Tasaday Green of Guilford will attend Greenfield (Mass.) Community College to major in mathematics. She plans to become a college mathematics teacher and hopes to assist local schools and home school groups to set up math clubs for their students.

• Judia Rose Ziegner of Newfane will continue her education in Vermont Technical College Nursing School in Brattleboro to complete her RN program next year. She graduated with her Licensed Practical Nursing degree in June 2015, where she was class president. For several years, she has served with the Newbrook Rescue Volunteer program.
