Tri-Park overdue utility charges abated

BRATTLEBORO - The Selectboard last week abated utility charges related to abandoned lots at the Tri-Park Cooperative Housing park.

Town Manager Peter Elwell told the board that $7,562.90 in municipal water and sewer charges had continued to accumulate on empty lots that sat vacant since Tropical Storm Irene in 2011, or because the tenants had abandoned the property.

Some of the costs included services related to lots impacted by Irene which totaled $3,077.28, said Elwell. The charges related to abandoned lots equaled $4,485.62.

The board approved waiving the overdue charges.

Elwell explained that in the future, Tri-Park will pay the base utility fees on abandoned mobile homes from the date that one tenant leaves until a new tenant assumes responsibility for the property.

Worn out pumps a sign of increased business

BRATTLEBORO - Public Works Director Steve Barrett said that the pumps at the Exit 1 Industrial Park Wastewater Pump Station couldn't keep up with increased flows from the businesses in the industrial area, and the Selectboard has approved emergency replacement funds of $22,837 to replace them.

The demand has exceeded the pumps' capacity and they need replacing, Barrett told the Selectboard on July 21.

Increased discharge is a sign of more business in the area, he added.

Barrett said that the unbudgeted expense would come from the Capital Fund for water and sewer projects.

According to Barrett, the pumps were installed in 1984. The town upgraded them about 11 years ago.

Businesses located at the Exit 1 Industrial Park include G.S. Precision, Kollmorgen, and the VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic.
