Auction to benefit scholarship fund

WHITINGHAM — On Saturday, Aug. 8, at 10 a.m., there will be a benefit auction at the barn on Town Hill in Whitingham, conducted by Bob Lambert of White Wolf Auctions.

Contents of the barn, formerly inhabited by Reg and Elaine Maynard, will be sold, and the property (a barn on 2 acres and two additional 2-acre lots) will also be offered for sale.

All proceeds from the contents of the property will be donated to the THV Scholarship, administered through Vermont Student Assistance Corporation.

Since 2001, the THV Scholarship has awarded 787 students from Windham County (51 from Whitingham or Wilmington) a total of $311,000.

Founded by Reg and Elaine Maynard (anonymously, while they were alive), the THV scholarship “was created to encourage Windham County residents to seek education after high school and to contribute fully to freedom, peace, and social understanding throughout the world, beginning in their own homes and communities.”

Reg Maynard understood the effect of contributing critical support to the education of needy students.

When he graduated from Wilmington High School, he had no hope of furthering his education. During the summer following his graduation from high school, his former principal and basketball coach, George Perry, stopped him on the street and inquired about his plans. When told that he'd be staying in town and working, Perry sprang into action.

Encouragement and advocacy from Perry resulted in Reg graduating from the University of Vermont with a degree in civil engineering that he later supplemented with a night-school MBA from Boston University, leading to a 30-year career in business.

Having retired to Whitingham and inspired by the view from Town Hill, the Maynards sought to return Perry's favor by contributing to the future of Windham County students.
