Windham Country History Fair returns to Newfane Common

NEWFANE — The fifth biennial Windham County History Fair is set for Saturday, Aug. 22, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., on the historic Newfane Common on Route 30.

The Fair is a festival of vintage exhibits, demonstrations and historic tours featuring Windham County's rich heritage. A special exhibit of Windham County artifacts from the collection of the Vermont Historical Society, along with exhibits by many of Windham County's Historical Societies, will feature 18th, 19th, and early 20th century life in Windham County.

Antique professionals will appraise attic treasures for a donation of $5. (All proceeds support the Museum of the Historical Society of Windham County). Bookbinding and restoration demonstrations will take place throughout the day. Residents may bring old books for a free professional evaluation.

Other ancient skills on display include musket and flintknapping, blacksmithing, carding and spinning, woodworking, and clay pottery making.

Dave Allen will present Old Maps of Vermont, and have copies available for purchase.

Windham Superior Court Judge John Wesley will take visitors on a tour of the County Courthouse. Tours of the County Jail, the historic Village of Newfane, the old Newfane railroad station, as well as a tour of the old Newfane Cemetery on Cemetery Hill are also scheduled.

Children (and adults) can take the “wheel” of Vermont Rail Action's simulated train engine. The day will also include antique cars, tractors, and fire engines, as well as crafters, a bargain table, raffles, food by the NewBrook Fire Department Auxiliary, and a History Quest scavenger hunt.

Admission is free. Contact [email protected] for more information. For an updated schedule of events, see the Historical Society's website: www.historicalsocietyofwindhamcounty.org.
