Vermont Jazz Center launches a new semester of classes

BRATTLEBORO — The Vermont Jazz Center will host a new 10-week session of classes beginning this week. Courses include an expanded youth program for ages 10 to 16, a new ensemble led by bebop master Scott Mullett (Blue Note Ensemble), Anna Patton's popular Ear Training, Vocal Harmony Chorus, and the VJC's Latin Jazz Ensemble.

Consider joining a combo and learn how to perform classic jazz compositions under the guidance of one of the VJC's professional faculty. Never improvised? No problem. There are opportunities for all including classical musicians intrigued by jazz's structure and improvisational opportunities.

Sessions are 10 weeks long (except for Youth Jazz, which is eight weeks). Here are the starting dates:

• Monday, 5:15 to 6:45 p.m. Blue Note Ensemble with Scott Mullett, instructor. First class meets Sept. 14.

• Tuesday, 3:45 to 5 p.m. Youth Jazz Ensemble with Eugene Uman, instructor. First class meets Sept. 29.

• Wednesday, 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. Latin Jazz Ensemble with Julian Gerstin and Eugene Uman, instructor. First class meets Sept. 16.

• Thursday, 5:45 to 7:30 p.m. Vocal Jazz Ensemble with Anna Patton, instructor. First class meets Sept. 10. Also, from 7:45 to 8:45 p.m., Ear Training with Anna Patton, instructor. First class meets Sept. 10.

All are invited to attend Wednesday night jam community sessions, held weekly from 8 to 10. All levels and all instruments are invited.
