Brattleboro Union High School presents an early spring concert

BRATTLEBORO — The Brattleboro Union High School Music Department will present an early Spring Concert on Wednesday, March 23, at 7 p.m., in the BUHS auditorium. The program is free.

Featured ensembles include the concert band, jazz band, jazz workshop, and Madrigals.

The concert band will open with a planetary-themed program including David Maslanka's fanfare, Mother Earth, and two movements from Gustav Holst's suite, The Planets (Mars and Jupiter).

Jazz Workshop will perform next, presenting three selections. They include Josef Zawinul's Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, Jerome Richardson's Groove Merchant and Don Sickler's arrangement of Elmo Hope's Low Tide.

The Madrigals will add a vocal music component to the concert with a program that includes the Jamaican-style spiritual “Shut de Do” by Randy Stonehill, featuring soloists Katia Brock, Jason Guerino, and Derrick Harnish. The group will also perform “Elohim, Hashivenu,” a Hebrew motet by Salamone Rossi, and a Hungarian dance song entitled “Tambur” arranged by Lajos Bados.

The Jazz Band will close the concert. Their program includes the Glenn Miller Orchestra swing classic, “In the Mood” by Joe Garland, Thelonius Monk's “Well You Needn't,” Freddie Hubbard's “Sky Dive,” and Kris Berg's “Cobblestones.” Soloists will include Kyra Johnston, trumpet; Claire Thomas, tenor sax; Brian McCarthy, alto sax; Jacob Gartenstein, drums; Gabbi Walton, guitar; and Ian Epstein, trombone.

Stephen Rice directs the concert and jazz band, Patty Meyer leads Madrigals, and Eugene Uman and Robert Freeberg direct Jazz Workshop.
