Appointments made, truck bid awarded

PUTNEY — PUTNEY - The Selectboard unanimously approved the appointment of Blanche Coty to the Conservation Commission and the reappointment of Thomas Goddard as health officer at the April 13 regular Board meeting.

The board reviewed bids for a dump truck, dump-truck body, and equipment.

There was some discussion among Board members, Town Manager Cynthia Stoddard, and Highway Superintendent Brian Harlow on vendors, truck manufacturers, and warranties.

The Board unanimously voted to purchase a Western Star dump truck from Patriot Freightliner in Westminster for $104,406. The body and additional equipment will come from Viking at a cost of $39,670.

Hickory Ridge Road project contract is awarded

PUTNEY - After receiving five bids for the Hickory Ridge Road culvert-replacement project, Town Manager Cynthia Stoddard asked the two lowest bidders to submit recommendations for projects of a similar scope and size, Stoddard told the Selectboard at their April 13 regular Board meeting.

Stoddard reviewed the information with Highway Superintendent Brian Harlow and, from that data, recommended the Board award the bid to Newfane-based contractor A.S. Clark & Sons at a cost of $93,853. Board members agreed and unanimously voted to award A.S. Clark & Sons the contract.

There was some discussion about the money the town saved by purchasing the box culvert directly from the maker, rather than ordering it through the contractor.

Archie Clark, co-owner of A.S. Clark & Sons, was in attendance at the meeting and told town officials, “it's not all that uncommon for a town to purchase the culvert separately."

Construction is scheduled to begin in September and will last from four to six weeks, during which Hickory Ridge Road will be closed to vehicle traffic.

Fire Department loses Assistant Chief

PUTNEY - Chris Fellows, Assistant Chief of the Fire Department, recently announced his resignation, Selectboard Chair Josh Laughlin reported at the April 27 regular Board meeting.

Fellows accepted a full-time position with the Brattleboro Fire Department. Fire Chief Thomas Goddard told town officials he doesn't intend to fill the assistant position right away.

“We congratulate Chris on his new position,” Laughlin said on behalf of the town, adding, “[we] thank him wholeheartedly for his many years of service to Putney.”
