Mixed-media, textile artists discuss their work at MGFA

BRATTLEBORO — Mitchell-Giddings Fine Arts will host two artist talks this weekend at their gallery on 183 Main St.

As part of “Color & Construct,” an exhibit featuring the mixed-media assemblages of Lauren Pollaro, Pollaro will talk about her work on Saturday, May 14, at 5 p.m.

Working as a jewelry artist for over 20 years, Pollaro honed technical skills and fulfilled interests in new techniques through courses, workshops, and studio experiments. According to a news release, her mixed-media wall sculpture has evolved from her jewelry practice, with harmonious combinations of color, texture, and form.

Her larger-scale work continues to evolve. According to the artist, “My recent works are about exploring visual space, moving through this space and arriving at a destination. The joy in making my work comes from the process - the exploration of materials, experimenting with color and/or textural combinations and the spontaneity of working in this way.“

On Sunday, May 15, at 7 p.m., textile artist Jackie Abrams will present a visual journey to Ghana, Namibia, and Uganda entitled, “Textile Travels (and more!) in Africa.”

Abrams will present images and tales from her travels to the workshops of Kente cloth weavers, following the steps of glass-bead makers and seeing basket makers as they work. The public is invited to experience and enjoy the culture, the people, and the places.
