Tree planting, pruning set for village

BELLOWS FALLS — Replacement trees will be planted on Green Street in Bellows Falls this month.

The Rockingham Tree Committee has announced plans to plant four crabapple trees on Green Street to replace trees which have been removed. Tree Committee spokesperson Ellen Howard said the Rockingham Tree Plan calls for replacing trees where they have been removed.

The town of Rockingham received a tree-planting grant from the Vermont Urban and Community Forest Program in 2015 for the tree planting. The grant is a 50-50 match. In addition, three crab apple trees will be planted on South Street.

The South Street planting is a continuation of prior planting done with a similar grant.

The planting wasn't done in 2015 due to the many road and water-line construction projects. In addition, one tree will be planted at Island Park. This tree was funded via a donation from Green Mountain Power when other trees in the Park had to be removed due to power-line work.

The Tree Committee also has made arrangements with the River Valley Technical Center in Springfield for tree pruning at Island Park on Depot Street. The pruning is scheduled to be done May 11 and 12.

The Island Park trees were last pruned many years ago with grant funds. Students in the Horticulture and Natural Resources Program at River Valley Tech have previously done tree pruning in the Square and at the Waypoint Center in Bellows Falls.
