Townspeople invited to discuss community communications over ice cream

GUILFORD — In an attempt to help improve community communications and devise a better way of letting townspeople know what's going on locally, the Planning Commission is inviting townspeople to assemble to get some ideas - and “is having an ice cream social for the fun aspect of it,” said commission member Michelle Frehsee.

The social and meeting, on Friday, June 10, runs from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Broad Brook Grange, with child care available.

“We're just hanging out for the first 45 minutes or so,” delaying the business of the meeting to make it possible for people returning to town after work to participate, she said.

According to Frehsee, the commission identified the frustration of disseminating information to townspeople during the recent revisions of the Town Plan.

“We really want to start getting the conversation going,” she said in describing the desire for “one hub that stays updated” that people in town can access, with or without Internet. “What can we do to communicate better without people having to try to keep up with 30 or 40 websites?"

At the gathering, townspeople can get some updates about the covered bridge project, the new Andrew Weeks Trail, a proposed solar installation, and the Black Barn Arts Project, among other initiatives in town.

“We need to come up with a formula,” Frehsee said. “So many times I hear back from people, 'We didn't know this was going on.'"
